Russell library hosts first Authors’ Day
The Russell Township library held their first Authors’Day on Saturday, January 25. Fif- teen local authors attended, most of whom spent the morning at the Russell branch where they described why they had written a book or books, and the afternoon at the Embrun branch, where they read passages from their books. tive fiction to the fascination of local writer and poet Baird McNeill. Diane Wade descri- bed various publishing methods she has used to preserve historical accounts and photographs. Wade worked with the Rus- sell Village Women’s Institute to produce Snapshot of Russell 2010. Artist and former animator and director Paul Schibli described how he had illustra- ted a children’s book that was published but not distributed because the publisher closed. Many of the authors were self-pu- blished—either through a company that they paid, or through a print-on-demand website. Others, such as Alberte Villeneuve, wrote for an established publisher then moved to self-publishing. All of the authors had ama- zing stories, and Ottawa author Laurie Fra- ser grabbed their attention with her tale of marriage to a Kurdish freedom fighter. Levac. Il ne faudrait pas qu’à un moment donné on se disperse tellement et que l’on dilue nos projets et aussi l’argent qu’on a à notre disposition ainsi que nos énergies. Je pense que c’est mieux si les trois régions s’entraident.» Un deuxième consultation avait lieu mar- di, à Embrun (après notre heure de tom- bée). In the morning, at the Russell branch, the authors each spent a few minutes descri- bing what had brought them to the point of writing a book or books. In the afternoon, at the Embrun branch, each author read a short passage. The range of talent was astounding, from authors and illustrators who had partici- pated in children’s book projects to Metis author K.D. Beckett who has written an ongoing historical series. Discussions sur l’éclosion de la culture dans Prescott-Russell

ROCKLAND | La première d’une série de trois rencontres concernant la création d’un nouvel organisme voué à la promo- tion de la culture dans Prescott-Russell a eu lieu mercredi, à Rockland. Près d’une trentaine d’intervenants du domaine des arts et de la politique mu- nicipale étaient réunis à l’Hôtel de Ville de Rockland. Le but de cette rencontre était de prendre le pouls de la situation actuelle et de l’avenir des arts et de la culture dans la région de même que la mise en place d’un conseil régional des arts. La séance de consultation a pris une tour- nure de speed dating (rencontres express) alors que les intervenants échangeaient tour à tour leurs idées et leurs visions. Certains participants ont réclamé un mandat clair et précis d’un éventuel con- seil des arts. «Avant toute chose, il faut savoir ce que ce conseil va apporter. Une fois que vous avez ça, on pourra penser à la représentation», a affirmé Paula Assaly,
