20 For ye are bought with a price: there fore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. GOLDEN T E X T : “What! know ye not that your body is-the terfiple of the Holy Ghost which is in you,, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” (1 Cor. 6:19). DEVOTIONAL READING: Psa. 116:42-19. I. T he C reation of M an (G en . 1:27, 28) M AN WAS created by God’s sacredness of human life grows from the fact that man was created in the image of God, that is, as a triune being., This is true of both man and woman, and when these two are brought together, they are one in the sight of the Creator (cf. Gen. 5:2; 1 Cor. 11:7). God purposed that man should have dominion over “ every living thing” upon the earth. That original dominion was one that would grow out Qf re spect for man on the part of creation; but since the flood, it is a dominion growing out of fear and dread, with the consequence that the living things now must be tamed, and kept tamed by man (cf. Gen. 9:1-2). This passage silences the teaching of both materialistic and theistic evo lution. No one can believe the teach ings of Scripture and of evolution at the same time. They are mutually an tagonistic, particularly in the matter of the creation of man. Any one who rejects this record in Genesis must of necessity reject also the testimony of Jesus Christ (cf. John 5:39-46). n. T he W orth of M an (M att . 12:11, 12) In the time of our text, a man was wealthy or poor, according to the number of animals he possessed. The Lord Jesus pointed out that whatever wealth one might have, a man was worth more than all that could be accumulated. In the discussion -of the Sabbath and its sacredness, Christ declared that everything was subservient to the good of man. Man is the head of all creation, including the appoint ment of the Sabbath by God. The sacredness of the Sabbath had been accentuated to the degree that every thing else took p lower place in im portance. Men accused Jesus of being worthy of death, because they said He had broken the Sabbath laws. So “sacred” was the Sabbath to them that, rather than break its prohibition against doing any work on that day, they would allow a man to die before Outline and Exposition
they would do anything to help him on the Sabbath. In this passage, Jesus taught that human life is more sacred and important than the ,Sabbath, in the same way that .it is of greater value than all material wealth. in. T he P ractice of M an (R om . 14:19-21) Viewed from both the positive and negative aspects, here are important rules for conduct. Often only the nega-
tive side is stressed. One is to “follow after the things that make for peace” (v. 19) ; that is, he is to be actively progressing in the knowledge of Christ who is, Himself, “our peace” (Eph. 2:14). Only thus is it possible to know the “things wherewith one may edify another.” When, by God’s grace, this Christ-centered attitude is maintained, the prohibitions of verses 20 and 21 w ill constitute no problem whatso ever. That there should be, among
