Christ. Others have had their spiritual growth retarded. Intemperance causes Christ to be falsely represented. 4. "Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost" (1 Cor. 6:19). For His sake, the body should be kept clean. The tabernacle in the wilderness was all beautiful within because it was the place where the glory of God’s pres ence was manifested. Today, the body of every believer is a living temple of God’s Spirit. Some believers need to take a scourge of cords and drive out the unholy things which have been admitted into ’ the temple of their lives. Golden Text Illustration A . C orinthians 6:19 Sandow’s story of the way he devel oped his muscle was told by him in Leslie's Weekly. He was frail as a child, and was not expected to be fit for any strenuous career, but a vision of physical perfection kindled in him a resolve to attain it. “ I went into Italy,” he says, “ and there my eyes were opened. The Greek and Roman statues I saw there' inspired me at once fo lift from myself the stigma of weakness, for I felt that, even in our time, the weak man was despised. I went at the labor of revitalization with energy and persistence. You per ceive I have somewhat succeeded. Let me tell you that I am still at i t I maintain that it is .possible for any man to emulate my example, as I emulated Greeks and Romans.” Even more important than excel lence of strength in the human body is the fact of the Holy Spirit’s indwell ing presence in every Christian’s tem ple of clay. When we realize this great truth, we shall want to so conduct our lives that our bodies w ill be to “ the „praise of his glory.”—Adapted from Tha Bottles of Heaven. believers, any difficulty at all on these questions is proof that â love of self is being cherished in place of love of Christ. IV. T he C hristian ’ s W ay of L ife (1 C or . 6:19, 20) The fact that the Christian has a body does not mean that he owns his body. Christians must, recognize, and acknowledge by action, that the own ership belongs to God. The £hristian must remember also that his body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, therefore he must exer cise great care in the use of it. A Christian’s body must glorify God who dwells within it, as within, a sanc tuary. Points and Problems Temperance or self-control is/a part o f'th e fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22, 23, R. V.). Pour reasons for such fruit- - age in all phases of the believer’s living are suggested in the four pas sages of Scripture selected for today’s lesson. 1. "So God created man in his own image" (Gen. 1:27). This was man’s original condition. Through sin this image .became sadly defaced, but through the new creation it may be restored. Looking at the New Testa ment passages, Ephesians 4:23, 24 and Colossians 3:10, it becomes evident that this image of God consists in righteousness, holiness, and knowl edge. It is a moral and not a physical likeness. Intemperance defiles again this restored image of God within the soul, and is sin. 2. "How much then is a man better than a sheep?" (Matt. 12:12). He is better,' primarily, Jbecause he is a spirit having the possibility of com munion with God. Man has been likened to a three-story building. The upper story is the place of observation, the place where God holds communion with man. There the spirit of man dwells. The second story is the place of the soul, the link between the body and the spirit, the seat of the emo tional nature. The lowest story is the abode of the body. In the fa ll of man, the third story fell into the basement. Man became sensual, degenerate, and darkened in his understanding. He needs the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit to restore his spirit to its proper place of fellowship with God. Once restored, intemperance of any kind hinders this'fellowship. 3. "It is evil for that man who eateth with offense" (Rom. 14:20). Intemper ance is a stumbling block. It assumes many forms. There is intemperance in eating, in drinking, in spending, and in pleasure, etc. Many have stum bled their way into ruin over the in consistencies of professed followers of
