212) Take responsibility for selecting the correct PPE, equipment and method to grind safely and effectively (Ability, intermediate level)
ELEMENT 24.1 - GRINDING
Learning objectives:
213) The participants can explain the short- and long-term risks associated with working with a grinder and how to mitigate those risks (Knowledge, intermediate level)
214) The participants can discuss and explain work situations involving repetitive tasks with hand tools. They will also explain the risks of short- and long-term injuries associated with repetitive work using hand tools (Knowledge, intermediate level) 215) The participants can take responsibility to control hazards associated with high-speed rotating tools, including flying debris and dust, exposed moving parts at high speed, noise, vibration, and electricity (Ability, intermediate level) 216) The participants can act independently in safely performing the accurate grinding of composite materials to reveal the fibre orientation, and create overlaps and/or scarf joints to existing material prior to applying repair layers (Ability, intermediate level)
The instructor shall:
Lead a discussion on the ergonomic implications and health and safety risks associated with working with a grinder, including: flying debris and dust, exposed moving parts at high speed, noise, vibration, and electricity Demonstrate how to mitigate potential risks associated with the above listed hazards by means of body positioning, adequate breaks, correct PPE (such as anti-vibration gloves, hearing protection, eye protection, and respiratory protective equipment), pre-use tool inspection, and electrical safety devices such as RCDs
Explain the different grades of grinding disc available
Demonstrate how to recognise and replace a worn grinding disc
Demonstrate how to safely use a grinder to accurately grind a composite structure to reveal the fibre orientation, and create overlaps and/or scarf joints of the correct dimensions in each layer of laminate
Facilitate practice to improve the participants’ ability to:
a. select and correctly use the appropriate PPE for the task and perform a pre-use tool inspection before working with a grinder
