Technical training

Basic Technical Training Standard / V9 2024-06-24

22) The participants can describe 1-stage and 2-stage tightening and why it is important for bolt torquing and tensioning (Knowledge, basic level)

23) The participants can recognise different types of bolts and the implications for bolt tightening (Knowledge, basic level)

24) The participants can explain why there are correct storage and transport procedures for bolts, washers and nuts (Knowledge, intermediate level)

25) The participants can explain the basic principles of yield strength and tensile strength and the relationship to lubrication and residual bolt load (Knowledge, intermediate level)

The instructor shall:

Explain and lead a discussion on 1-stage and 2-stage tightening and why it is important for bolt torquing and tensioning

Explain and demonstrate the basic principles of bolt elongation (necking), yield strength and tensile strength, and possible consequences of exceeding these

Illustrate examples of a bolt where the yield strength has been exceeded

Explain and lead a discussion on the difference types of bolts and what participants must be aware of when using each type for bolt tightening, including:

a.

stud bolts and turning during tightening

b.

bolts with bolt heads

c. bolt sizes and considerations for dealing with heavy bolts e.g. M60-M100

Lead a discussion and ask engaging questions about the importance of following storage and transport procedures for bolts, nuts and washers

Facilitate group discussions on:

a. bolts, threads, lubricants, strengths of materials, and vibration and temperature influences (including elongation, yield strength and tensile strength), and the potential consequences of not following procedures

b.

force and torque

c.

residual bolt load
