them. But instead, they “ did evil in the sight of the Lord” (4:1) by turn ing to other gods that had no power. Even then, the Lord loved His sin ning people so much that He gave them “judges,” or leaders, to help them. Usually these judges were men'. But one of them was a woman. Her name was Deborah. LESSON STORY: Under a great palm tree, in tlie open field, Deborah would meet “the children of Israel [when they] came up to her for judgment” (v. 5). She would hear what they had to say, and she would be listening all the time to what the Lord would whis per to her heart to answer the people. The children of Israel had sinned against God, and a cruel king was now their master. He had “ nine hun dred chariots of iron” to use for war against them. No wonder they were afraid! In their trouble, the Lord’s people did a wise thing: They "cried unto the Lord” (v. 3). Right away, the Lord told Deborah what to do. She was to send for a man named Barak and show him how to lead the people in battle, and give him God’s promise. “ I Will deliver [the enemy] into thine hand” (v. 7); Barak wanted Deborah to go with him a(3 he led the people, and she did. Just as the Lord said He would, He gave His people the victory when they trusted in Him (v. 15). De- bora'll and Barak were so happy that they sang a song together. It began “Praise ye the Lord” (5:2). ' OBJECTS: Two large needles,’ sev eral small needles, and a large mag net. (One of the large needles should be a little smaller than the other. Rub this needle on one prong of the mag net, and allow it to remain contact ing the magnet several hours. Be care ful that the other needle does not touch the magnet.) LESSON: Which of these two nee dles do you think is the stronger? “The biggest one, of course.” Don’t be too sure until they have been tested. The larger one reminds me of a man, and the other of a; wo man. We are.accustomed to thinking that men are stronger than women; but in many ways this is not true. We will test the needles to see which is the stronger. Here is a pile of small er needles. I place the largest needle on the pile and nothing happens. When I place the smaller needle on the pile, it lifts many from the group. In this case, the smaller one is the stronger. Would you like to know why the smaller needle was the stronger? It was because it had been in contact with this large magnet. While in con- Object Lesson A N eed and a D eed

ered or saved them from their diffi culties and their enemies (cf. 2:16). Today our great Deliverer says, “ Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I w ill give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). 3. "Is not the Lord gone out before thee? . , . and there was not a man left” (vs. 14, 16). When the Lord fights for His people there is complete vic tory. God used Barak upon this occa sion just as He uses men today in His service; but after all, the battle was the Lord’s and He was the Victor. There is a spiritual battle on today (cf. Eph. 6:12). The saints of God can not win this battle alone. But no power can withstand the offensive of the Sop of God. • Golden Text Illustration E sther 4:14 More than fifty lives were lost in the early part of March, 1927, in an explosion in the mines of South Wales. The prime minister, Stanley Baldwin, who was in Wales at the time, visited the scene of the disaster. Accompanied by Mrs. Baldwin, he expressed sympa thy to the bereaved; An eyewitness said: “Mrs. Bald win went into one of the grief-stricken homes where a wife was mourning the loss of her husband. Instinctively the two women put their arms around each other and wept together.” A writer made this- comment on the gracious act: "It- was one of those human touches which do so much to assuage the anguish of grief and to reveal, the common denominator of the human heart amid all our social differences.” —Pearls for Preachers, by Hart.
