1.1 PLANNING CONTEXT Fort Worth’s planning framework is shaped by the need to manage growth, improve mobility, and enhance economic competitiveness. The city’s transportation network must accommodate the unique needs of its urban, suburban, and rural communities, balancing diverse land uses and infrastructure development to meet growing population demands. The City of Fort Worth is currently developing two key long-range plans that work together with M1M to improve quality of life, safety, and mobility: Re-Imagine Fort Worth, which is the City’s 2050 Comprehen- sive Plan, and Play Big, the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Open Space plan.
Fort Worth recently became the 12th largest city in the United States, surpassing San Jose in population last year. CLIMBING THE RANKS Fort Worth spans a vast 359 square miles of land area. EXPANSIVE CITY Nearly half of Fort Worth’s land—48.9% or 169,066 acres— is categorized as vacant, agricultural, or underdeveloped. OPEN SPACES
