These water bodies are also vital for maintaining water quality in the region, and transportation infrastructure presents risks associated with runoff and pollutants. Impervious surfaces can increase the number of pollut- ants, such as oils, heavy metals, and sediments, that enter water bodies through runoff. These pollutants can degrade the quality of the Trinity River, creeks, and lakes, impacting aquatic ecosystems and drinking water supplies. Figure 01-7 shows water quality assessments for Fort Worth’s major water bodies from ATTAINS, the EPA’s Assessment, Total Maximum Daily Load Tracking and Implemen- tation System. The assessments are based on monitoring data collected by states and other agencies. The primary issues in Lake Worth, West Fork Trinity River, and Clear Fork Trinity
River are dioxins, including polychlo- rinated biphenyls (PCBs). Escherichia Coli (E. coli) is an impaired param- eter in Dosier, Marine, Sycamore, and Village Creeks. While addressing these contaminants with green infrastruc- ture (GI) is challenging, it is feasible. Effective water quality management involves incorporating Best Manage- ment Practices (BMPs) to filter and treat runoff before it reaches water bodies. Techniques shown in Figure 01-8 such as bioswales, rain gardens, and sediment traps that help capture and treat pollutants are becoming ubiquitous in transportation projects. The Fort Worth Stormwater Criteria Manual provides comprehensive guidelines for the design and manage- ment of stormwater systems in Fort
