Unfortunately, the national and state-level decreasing trends have not been reflected on our roadways. Where are we now? Let’s start with the problem, summarized in Figure 02-2. Over the past decade, traffic fatalities and serious injuries have decreased in many countries, but not in the US. In 2023, nearly 41,000 lives were lost on US roads, marking only the second year of a downward trend. Texas accounts for over 10% of these national fatalities, with a slightly smaller decrease than the national average. In Fort Worth, 123 lives were lost on roadways in 2023, a 13% increase from the previous year.
ROADWAY CRASHES IN FORT WORTH, 2019-2023 Figure 02-3 shows the total number of crashes per year, along with the number of KSI (Killed or Seriously Injured) crashes and the percentage of crashes that resulted in fatalities or serious injuries. The total number of crashes remained relatively stable over the five years, ranging from 13,371 in 2023 to a high of 16,424 in 2021. However, the percentage of crashes resulting in fatalities or serious injuries increased slightly over time, from 2.92% in 2019 to 4.03% in 2023.
