Figure 02-4 and Figure 02-5 show the significant roles that speeding and distracted driving play in Fort Worth’s crash severity. Speeding-related crashes account for 28% of all crashes but make up a larger 36% of KSI crashes, indicating that speeding greatly increases the likelihood of severe outcomes. Similarly, distracted driving contributes to 24% of all crashes and 20% of KSI crashes. Although its impact on KSI crashes is less pronounced than speeding, distracted driving remains a key factor in overall crash incidence. These findings emphasize that both speeding and distracted driving are critical areas to address for enhancing road safety. Speeding, in particular, tends to correlate with more severe injuries or fatalities, while distracted driving is a widespread issue affecting general crash rates. Both behaviors will be prioritized in Fort Worth’s Vision Zero Safety Action Plan to help reduce fatal and serious injury crashes.
Figure 02-6 compares the percentage of crashes involving Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs) and large trucks in Fort Worth to other Texas cities and the state-wide average. Fort Worth has a notably higher rate of large truck crashes at 10.52% compared to the state-wide average of 6.2%, with other cities like Dallas, El Paso, and San Antonio showing lower percentages. This trend underscores a unique safety challenge in Fort Worth, where large truck-involved crashes are disproportionately higher and tend to have more severe outcomes.
