Her sleep that night was very fitful. Every once in awhile she would awaken and remembering where she was and where she was going, she wept. But she kept her sorrow to hersel f. Her captors would never know about her fears and her loneliness. They would only tantalize her all the more. She knew what these Syrians were like. The next day the little captive and her captors entered Damascus. When they were approaching this great city, Miriam was overcome with homesickness. The glimmer ing whiteness of its steepled build ings reminded her of that great city Jerusalem where she had gone once with her parents — the city of Je hovah, her God. But as soon as she had entered its gate she saw the great difference. On every hand were signs which told her that this was a heathen city. And instead of being greeted'with the kind salu tations that met her as she entered Jerusalem, here she was distressed to hear names called after her that she knew were words of hate and reproach. Where were they going to take her now? Had they been fooling her about Captain Naaman’s wife wanting a little girl for a servant?

chariot. One galloped on ahead and soon returned. “ Just this side of Kedesh there is an ideal place to stay for the night,” he told the charioteer. “We can stay near a cave where there’s lots of water.” “ Cave?” thought Miriam. “ They are afraid of hostile tribes. Maybe they’ll attack these Syrians and set me free!” Af t e r a late meal Mi r iam watched her captors as they burnt incense to the moon and stars. One Syrian took an idol out of the bag gage on his horse and set it up and bowed to it. But Miriam kneeled to her unseen God. “ Say, little maid,” called one of the men, “ you Israelites make me laugh. You pray to the air and ex pect to be heard. If you want a god to pray to, I have another one in my saddle bag. Just let me know.” But Miriam paid no attention to this mockery. The God of her par ents would always be her God. She had seen God answer prayer for her people. She knew that there was still a prophet in Israel to whom God was very real. She had heard of His many miracles. Even in her beloved Israel not every knee had bowed to Baal.
