system, the sun is the center, and the earth has become its servitor. Has self been de posed in me? Is Christ my Sun o f Right eousness whom I rejoice to obey? My Lord, keep me from this evil heart. Give me the soul that is right with Thee at its innermost center and core. Give me the hu mility that makes confession, “ I am not worthy to be called thy son.” — A l e x a n d e r S m e l l ie . “ Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom . 1:7). It is remarkable that the Apostle Paul in his thirteen epistles, writes : “Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.” He had such a deep sense o f the inseparable oneness o f the Fa ther and Son in the work of grace, that in each opening benediction he refers to both. This is a lesson for us o f the utmost im portance. There may be times in the Chris tian life when one thinks chiefly of God the Father, and prays to Him. But later on we realize that it may cause spiritual loss if we do not grasp the truth that each day and each hour it is only through faith in Christ and in living union with Him, that we can enjoy a full and abiding fellowship with God. O Christian, if you would wor ship God aright, seek Him and worship Him in Christ. And if you seek Christ, seek Him and worship Him in God. Then you will understand what it is to have your life “hid with Christ in God.” — A n d r e w M u r r a y . “Look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh” (Lk. 21: 28). ■ When all around are troubled, And dangers gather near; When wars and woes are rumored, And hearts fail men for fear; When from “ distress of nations” W e lift our eyes on high; How welcome is the promise, “ Redemption draweth night” ! bles are the fruit of our own folly and sin in trying to guide ourselves, and choosing our own way. But not the least o f the blessings that come to us from a child like compliance with the direction is that o f rest. “And ye shall find rest for your souls.” — S e le cte d . OCTOBER 12 A l l - I n c l u s iv e C h a r it y “ Charity suffereth long, and is kind . . is not easily provoked” (1 Cor. 13:4). The word “easily” in the Authorized Version should not be there. “Whence it Comes,” says Dr. Vaughan, “ I know not.” Christian love “beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” Oh, these “alls” 1 Do they not search you out, my brother? How much can you bear for Jesus? Can you bear to be slighted, can you bear to be despised, to be looked upon with just a breath o f sus picion, to have your motives travestied or maligned? Test your progress in heavenly things by your power to bear trials such as these. The little frets, the skin-deep wor ries, the petty crosses o f your daily path— these are enough to try the reality of your love. Love is the queen of graces. I f it be wanting, all else is nothing worth. N o tice the condition o f soul in which it can be exercised. This love must flow out o f a pure, or, as elsewhere the same word is translated, a clean heart.—E. W . M oore . OCTOBER 13 F u l l P r o v is io n “Shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” (Rom. 8:32). God has been so good! He has given us a great deal. W ill He give us any more? He has given us a great gift, but will He give us little gifts? God delivers not only from the penalty but the power o f sin. I f He gives life, He can surely keep it. There are some who say: “I believe I am born again, but I do not know how I shall get on, how I shall keep this new life alive.” If God has saved you so far, do you not think He will save you to the end? It is a grand argument, and it is one that He has put into our hands to overcome by. He has put it as a weapon in our hands, and He has sharpened it on the wood o f the cross. It is an invincible argument, “H ow shall he not, with himf” I would not care for any thing without H im ; He is the soul of every sacrifice, the fragrance o f every fruit. O blessed Jesus, somehow Thou art a part o f everything to the believing soul. ;—C. A. Fox. Possibly there are few things which we shall as much regret in the coming day of days as the small degree in which we have been openly identified with the earth’s re jected One. That He has no place in the world’s mad course is evident. But must not those who love Him sorrowfully con fess that we also are sometimes too sensi tively aware when the name of our Lord and Master is not likely to be welcomed? Let us not lose the heroic element from our discipleship, but drink into the spirit o f those who rejoiced “that they were counted worthy to suffer for his name.” — L u c y B e n n e t t . To take Christ’s yoke means submission -r-unqualified submission to His sway. “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand o f God.” “ Take my yoke upon you.” You will know Christ’s saving power in its fullness—to meet your daily need in the walk—in proportion as you know what it is to be controlled by His will. It means obedience. T o be yoked with Christ, and to be willing to follow His leading, is to have the benefit o f divine guidance. How great is this privilege! Most of our trou
