When tomorrow comes, it will be right for us to take up its cares. “Make a little fence o f trust Around today; Fill the space with loving work, And therein stay. Look not through the sheltering bars Upon tomorrow; God will help thee bear what comes O f joy or sorrow.” —J. R. M iller . OCTOBER 6 T he G round of C hristian R esponsibility “A garden enclosed is my sister, my spouse" (Cant. 4:12). The words “enclosed,” “shut up,” “sealed,” forcibly suggest the thought of the believer’s entire and well-defined sep aration from the world—like a piece of ground that has been reclaimed from the common around, well fenced, well planted, well cared for, and kept for the owner’s special use and pleasure. Though in the world, the Christian is not o f the world. As Christ Himself says, “They are not o f the world, even as I am not o f the world.” When the eye is kept steadfastly fixed on the Person o f the Beloved, the heart is kept full of Him, the conscience is clear, the judgment sound, and our service fruitful. The closer we are to the fountain-head ourselves, the surer we are to become the channels o f blessing to others. “He that saith he abideth in him, ought himself so to walk, even as he walked.” Here we en ter on the ground o f true Christian respon sibility.— T hings N ew and O ld . OCTOBER 7 W alking with G od “Blessed are the sincere in the way, who walk in the law o f the Lord" (Psa. 119:1, Margin). “Walking” signifies not rest but activity, whether of mind or o f body. Enoch’s activi ties o f mind—in the way of intercourse and communion—his activities o f service also were “with God.” When Adam was in an un fallen condition, the Lord God had walked with him in the garden (Gen. 3 :8 ). Enoch, however, was in the midst of a scene of increasing corruption and vio lence; no longer was it possible for God to walk with him as once He did in an un fallen creation, so Enoch walked with God. God Himself he knew: in God’s things he lived and moved and had his being. In body he trod the earth; in spirit he moved with God in His own place, and among His own things.—F. B. H ole . OCTOBER 8 T he R eligion of the E lder S on "And he was angry and would not go in” (Lk. 15:28). May God deliver me from the religion o f the elder brother 1 It is outward. It ren ders external service while the heart within is unforgiven. “Holy intention,” says Jeremy Taylor o f the golden mouth and the saintly life, “is to the action of a man that which the soul is to the body, or the root to the tree, or the fountain to the river.” Without it all my obedience is vain. It is self-seeking, too. The elder brother thanks God that he is no prodigal; he mag nifies and lauds and congratulates himself. And what about my own self-estimates ? In the Ptolemaic astronomy, the earth was the center o f the universe, and the planets did lowly obeisance to it; in the Copernician

OCTOBER 2 P ower to P erform “ Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty” (2 Cor. 3:17). The Holy Spirit emancipates the soul by the power that He communicates to the will. There is a power that comes from purified desire. But that power alone is not sufficient to lead us in freedom. There is a power that belongs to our renewed wills. We may know that our will is on the side of the g o o d ; to will the good may be pres ent with us, and yet, how to perform we find not. The power of the human will, the will o f even the renewed soul, is not strong enough to lead us into the path o f freedom. What then is needed? Nothing short of the power of. God. Now it is the Holy Ghost that communicates that power, and in precisely the same w ay; namely, by showing us Christ, by bringing us into con tact with Him, by revealing Him within the soul by the power o f God. —E van H. H opkins . OCTOBER 3 D ividends P aid in H eaven “Provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not" (Lk. 12:33). A bag that does not wax old is one that will never fail to be sending in an income. There are men in heaven, saved by grace (as all are), who were rich while on earth, but all their money was invested in fine mansions and gardens and railroads and bank shares. When they had possession of them, they failed to convert any part o f them into the exchange o f heaven, and now they get no more good from them. . . Very different is it with the saints who have given money to help save men from death, whether the amounts be large or small. . . . Such earthly investments pay dividends in heaven. —W illiam A shmore . OCTOBER 4 T he W aymark to the K ingdom “Let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me" (Mk. 8:34). The cross, it stands, and hath stood, from the beginning, as a waymark to the kingdom o f heaven. You know, if one ask you the way to such and such a place, you, for the better direction, do not only say, This is the way, but then also say, You must go by such a gate, by such a stile, such a bush, tree, bridge, or such like. Why, so it is here; art thou inquiring the way to heaven? Why, I tell thee^.Christ is the w ay; into Him thou must get, into His righteousness, to be justified; and if thou art in Him, thou wilt presently see the cross. Thou must take it up, or else thou wilt quickly go out o f the way that leads to heaven. —J ohn B unyan . OCTOBER S A D ay at a T ime “ Give us this day our daily bread” (Matt. 6:11). This seems a very small thing to ask— only bread for a day. Why are we not taught to pray for bread enough to last a week, or a month, or a year? For one thing, Jesus wanted to teach us a lesson o f continual dependence. He taught us to come each morning with a request simply for the day’s food, that we might never feel that we can get along without our Father. Another lesson He wanted to teach us was that the true way to live is by the day. W e are not to be anxious even about the supply o f tomorrow’s needs.
