IN A MANOR OF SPEAKING

A Grad’s Guide to Professional Growth, Planning, Property, and Peace of Mind THE NEXT CHAPTER STARTS NOW

Every May, we all feel the excitement of graduation season, but for those throwing their caps in the air, there’s also the quiet uncertainty that often comes with it. I remember that feeling well, standing at the edge of something new, full of ambition, but not entirely sure what the next step should be. If I could sit down with every graduate right now, I’d tell them this: You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to start moving forward, one step at a time. For grads just entering the professional world, it’s easy to focus on the big picture. The dream job, the ideal lifestyle, and all those grand long-term goals. Those things matter, but what matters more is breaking them into smaller, manageable pieces. Progress doesn’t happen all at once. It’s built through consistent, intentional steps where you learn, adjust, and grow along the way. Give yourself permission to start where you are, even if it’s not exactly where you hoped to be. As you move forward, don’t underestimate the power of simple human connection. The ability to introduce yourself confidently, to carry on a conversation, and to show curiosity about others are skills that open doors in ways a resume alone cannot. They’re also skills you can practice every day, in the smallest interactions. And perhaps most importantly, take chances on yourself. You will not meet every requirement on every opportunity that

interests you, and that’s okay. Growth often comes from stepping into spaces where you’re still learning. Trust that you’re capable of figuring things out as you go. Now, as an attorney, I often see a different side of life, moments when people wish they had planned just a little earlier. One of the most common misconceptions I hear is that planning for the future is something to worry about later. In reality, even a simple plan put in place early can make a meaningful difference.

It’s a quiet kind of responsibility, one that reflects care for the people in your life.

As you begin earning, saving, and building toward your future, you may also start thinking about homeownership. There’s something deeply meaningful about having a place that’s truly yours. It represents stability, independence, and the start of something lasting. But it’s also okay if that step takes time. Financial obligations such as student loan debt, limited savings, and early-career uncertainty are very real challenges. What matters is building a strong foundation. Learn how to manage your finances. Be intentional about saving, even in small amounts. Take care of your credit and make thoughtful decisions about debt. These habits don’t just prepare you to buy a home; they also set the stage for long-term financial security. If there’s one thing I hope every graduate carries with them, it’s that their future doesn’t depend on having all the answers today. It’s shaped by the choices you make along the way, how you show up, how you prepare, and how you care for both your present and your future. You’re building something meaningful, step by step, and that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be.

It can be as straightforward as naming a beneficiary for certain accounts or ensuring someone you trust can step in to make decisions if needed, be it as a medical or financial power of attorney. These aren’t complicated ideas, but they provide clarity and protection during unexpected moments when your loved ones may already be overwhelmed.

Practical Ways to Dial Down Criticism

“Why are you always on my case?”

their phone away. From their side, it felt like proof that they never measure up.

comment. You don’t have to stop correcting them, but sprinkling in more “I see you” moments can change how everything else lands. It’s also helpful to be as specific as possible and avoid saying things that cut personally. “You never try” digs into your teen’s character and is almost never true. “You left your dishes in the sink again. Can you grab them?” still holds a boundary and provides a clear correction without turning the issue into a character flaw. If you need to talk about something more serious, try starting with something positive or what you want for them, rather than what’s frustrating you. Most importantly, be willing to admit when you’re wrong. If you hear yourself saying something too harsh, say so. A quick, honest self-correction can help build trust with your teen and remind them you’re on their side, not just pointing out their mistakes.

If you’re the parent of a teenager, you’ve probably heard them ask something along those lines before. It can sometimes feel like it comes out of nowhere, especially if you know you also say kind things and only want the best for them. From your side, you were only asking about homework or reminding them to put

A lot of us grew up with parents who jumped in fast when something needed fixing, so we do the same. We comment on grades, clothes on the floor, screen time, and friends. It’s not wrong to care about any of those things. The trouble is that corrections often come out more frequently and more loudly than anything else we say. On top of that, teens have their own listening filter. When they are tired or unsure of themselves, they latch onto criticism and barely register the compliments you give them. One simple place to start is noticing your criticism-to-compliments ratio. Think about a typical school day and mentally list what your teen hears from you. If most of it is jobs to do, things to fix, and questions about grades, it makes sense that they brace for your next

Cost-Savvy Clean Cheap and Clever Springtime Home Hacks

Whether you greet spring-cleaning with sheer delight or utter dread, it doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated. While supermarket shelves are stocked with pricey products that will clean out your wallet as much as your clutter, there are simpler, less costly ways to make your home sparkle for the season. Here are a few surprising household cleaning hacks that will beautify your living space while being kind to your budget. Give your scraps a second chance. It’s often shocking how much we throw away without giving these items a helpful new purpose. You know all those used dryer sheets you toss away without a second thought? In addition to having a fresh scent, these frequently discarded pieces of cloth can work

well as makeshift dusters for everything from your TV to your blinds.

Speaking of blinds, don’t rush to throw out your next pair of worn-out socks. When dampened and slipped over your hands, they can remove dust and dirt from your slats as pristinely as most store-bought cleaners. Eliminate everyday annoyances. Now, let’s focus on two of the most frustrating cleaning chores imaginable: getting the mounds of dust and dirt off a ceiling fan and ridding your windows of those annoying streaks left by paper towels. For the first obstacle, you can find an unlikely solution in your bedroom. If you have a spent pillowcase that’s ready for the trash, use it

instead to capture the crud on your fan! Put it over each blade and slowly wipe down the surface. The cloth will catch the dirt, and the space in the pillowcase will trap it, preventing it from spilling onto your floor. As for those streaked windows, life can be made simpler if you’re a coffee drinker. Why? Because unused filters are super-absorbent and can remove those lingering lines in a flash. With a bit of resourcefulness and creativity, your spring-cleaning routine can keep your home blissful without breaking the bank.

Buyer Beware An inspection is not optional in these situations. A thorough review of the property can help you avoid unpleasant surprises. Bringing in contractors for repair estimates can also give you a realistic picture of future expenses. And don’t forget about the legal side. Reviewing the contract carefully, conducting a title search, and understanding your rights can make the difference between a smart investment and a costly mistake. A Seller’s Best Protection If you’re listing a home in its current condition, transparency is your strongest ally. Clear language in marketing materials and contracts reduces confusion and helps set proper expectations from day one. Don’t Navigate It Alone As-is transactions can move quickly, but they shouldn’t move blindly. Whether you’re buying a fixer-upper or selling a property that needs work, experienced legal guidance from our team can help protect your investment and your peace of mind. The right advice now can save you time, money, and stress later.

Seeing “as-is” on a listing can feel a little intimidating. Does it mean the house is falling apart? Is it a hidden bargain? Or both? In plain language, an as-is sale means the property is being transferred in its current condition. The seller isn’t agreeing to handle repairs before closing. Whatever issues exist, big or small, become the buyer’s responsibility after the deal is finalized. But that doesn’t mean you’re walking into the unknown. It just means you need to go in with your eyes wide open before you make any final decisions. Changes in Negotiations In many traditional transactions, inspections open the door to repair requests. Buyers may negotiate for fixes before moving forward. The Truth Behind ‘As-Is’ Home Sales AVOID COSTLY MISTAKES WITH THESE TYPES OF PROPERTIES

With an as-is property, the seller is making it clear from the start: They don’t plan to take on those projects. That said, price is still negotiable. Sometimes, homes offered in their current condition are priced to reflect needed improvements. The key is understanding what those improvements will actually cost. Beneath the Surface Some as-is properties are simply outdated. Others may have more serious concerns, including roof damage, heating and cooling issues, plumbing leaks, structural cracks, pest damage, or environmental hazards such as mold. This is where careful investigation becomes critical.
