Lessons From Dad

How to Be Resilient

L ast month, I talked about some of the most valuable lessons I learned from my mom. With Father’s Day coming up soon, I’ve also been thinking about all the important things I learned from my dad and what kind of lessons I want to teach my daughter. The Importance of Perseverance Here’s something a lot of people don’t realize about success: Being a successful person isn’t about never failing. Thomas Edison, one of the greatest inventors in history, tried 10,000 times before he finally created a working lightbulb. Successful people fail all the time! But they don’t give up. They re-evaluate and try again with a new plan. My dad showed me firsthand the importance of perseverance. When the going got tough, he buckled down and worked harder. Things didn’t always go his way, but he didn’t call it quits just because he struck out. He went back to bat and swung again. Running my own business hasn’t always been easy, and I wouldn’t be here today if my dad hadn’t taught me how to persevere. What a Strong Work Ethic Brings My dad is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. he grew up with three brothers, was in the Army, then the Naval Reserves, and eventually became a mechanical engineer. While working full time and raising a family, Dad attended night school to study mechanical engineering. I remember times when my dad looked so tired, but he kept working and studying, always on the move. And that hard work paid off when he got his degree. The things in life that are worth having are worth working hard for in order to achieve your goals. If you can’t put in the hard work for something, did you ever really want it? How to be Even-Tempered Dad had a tough upbringing. I won’t go into details, but it was the kind of experience that could easily make a man short-tempered. But Dad was always even-keeled, especially with kids. He was a determined, hardworking man, but he also knew how to be easygoing. Yes, we should work hard, but we should professional before making any investment decision. also enjoy life and treat one another well, successfully striking a work-life balance.

As a father myself, I’m always thinking about how I can teach my daughter these same lessons through my words and my actions. I also want to teach Bella healthy and productive communication — something that will help her in every part of her life. Parents have a heavy responsibility. Not only are we trying to raise our children to be good people, but we should also teach them the skills to be successful in all avenues of their lives. After that, they’ll be able to share those same lessons — and more — to the next generation. I’m fortunate that my dad taught me so many important lessons that helped me become the man and father I am today. Happy Father’s Day, Dad.
