Lessons From Dad

How to Be Resilient

L ast month, I talked about some of the most valuable lessons I learned from my mom. With Father’s Day coming up soon, I’ve also been thinking about all the important things I learned from my dad and what kind of lessons I want to teach my daughter. The Importance of Perseverance Here’s something a lot of people don’t realize about success: Being a successful person isn’t about never failing. Thomas Edison, one of the greatest inventors in history, tried 10,000 times before he finally created a working lightbulb. Successful people fail all the time! But they don’t give up. They re-evaluate and try again with a new plan. My dad showed me firsthand the importance of perseverance. When the going got tough, he buckled down and worked harder. Things didn’t always go his way, but he didn’t call it quits just because he struck out. He went back to bat and swung again. Running my own business hasn’t always been easy, and I wouldn’t be here today if my dad hadn’t taught me how to persevere. What a Strong Work Ethic Brings My dad is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. His parents were tough, Investment Advisory Services offered through Retirement Wealth Advisors (RWA), a Registered Investment Advisor. Wolf Retirement Navigation LLC and RWA are not affiliated. My dad showed

he grew up with three brothers, was in the Army, then the Naval Reserves, and eventually became a mechanical engineer. While working full time and raising a family, Dad attended night school to study mechanical engineering. I remember times when my dad looked so tired, but he kept working and studying, always on the move. And that hard work paid off when he got his degree. The things in life that are worth having are worth working hard for in order to achieve your goals. If you can’t put in the hard work for something, did you ever really want it? How to be Even-Tempered Dad had a tough upbringing. I won’t go into details, but it was the kind of experience that could easily make a man short-tempered. But Dad was always even-keeled, especially with kids. He was a determined, hardworking man, but he also knew how to be easygoing. Yes, we should work hard, but we should professional before making any investment decision. also enjoy life and treat one another well, successfully striking a work-life balance.

As a father myself, I’m always thinking about how I can teach my daughter these same lessons through my words and my actions. I also want to teach Bella healthy and productive communication — something that will help her in every part of her life. Parents have a heavy responsibility. Not only are we trying to raise our children to be good people, but we should also teach them the skills to be successful in all avenues of their lives. After that, they’ll be able to share those same lessons — and more — to the next generation. I’m fortunate that my dad taught me so many important lessons that helped me become the man and father I am today. Happy Father’s Day, Dad. WHY TAI CHI IS COOLER THAN YOU THINK Better Balance With the Internal Martial Art

Hundreds of studies demonstrate the mental and physical benefits this quiet martial art provides. Because of its focus on posture, tai chi is particularly helpful for balance. In Harvard’s analysis of 20 different studies, tai chi was shown to improve cognitive function and slow the progression of dementia more than other forms of exercise. While the movements appear mild, the practice of tai chi requires discipline and strength. That’s part of the reason why it provides a powerful punch of health benefits and also why less than 5 percent of people stick with it. Some teachers say it takes three years to learn the basic movements of tai chi — and more than a lifetime to master. Physical training, combined with the internal meditative aspect of tai chi, are the reasons martial arts legend Jet Li has turned to the exercise in recent years, and tax updates with you. even campaigning to make it an Olympic event. In an interview, Li explained his push to make tai chi a more widely recognized and accepted exercise: “In our attempts to push ourselves, we’ve lost sight of an important part of the sporting mindset: balance.” your risk of falling with its focus on posture. An ounce of preventive tai chi may be worth a pound of cure; the Center for Disease Control reports that people pay an average of $35,000 in health care costs every time they fall. Many community centers and health and wellness facilities offer opportunities to learn tai chi, from free community classes to entire tai chi facilities. Go see for yourself why this is the martial art everyone should practice. For anyone setting out on a mission to age gracefully, tai chi can help reduce

W hen you think about martial arts, a few images come to mind: Mr. Miyagi, possibly nunchucks, and people breaking objects using impressive disciplined strength. But one of the most powerful martial arts you may not immediately picture is tai chi. This ancient Chinese form of combat in slow motion is an internal martial art that works from the inside out by developing the body’s internal energy, known as qi, or “chi.” In Chinese medicine, balanced qi is essential to good health.

Getting in Your Own Way? How to Step Back and Plan for Retirement the Right Way

• 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, or 6 tbsp ghee • 3 russet potatoes (about 1/2 lb.), peeled • 1 tsp Kosher salt, plus more to taste • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1. In a small saucepan, heat butter over medium heat until foamy. Reduce heat if needed to avoid browning. Skim off white milk solids to make clarified butter (ghee). Transfer to a bowl and reserve. (This step won’t be needed if using ghee.) 2. Using the large holes on a box grater, grate potatoes. Transfer to a large bowl of cold water and stir until water becomes cloudy. Rinse potatoes under cold water, then squeeze out liquid using cheesecloth or a kitchen DIRECTIONS Be Ready to Accept Good News The biggest fear most people have when nearing retirement is running out of money. This is why we have sophisticated software we run after inputting all pertinent information, such as all sources of income, that tells us the probability of not running out of money during one’s lifetime. It’s a joy to see our clients’ reactions when we run the numbers and tell them they can retire earlier than expected and also keep their desired lifestyle intact. There’s a lot to worry about when planning for retirement, but at WRN, it’s our goal to help people feel at ease when we talk about their plans. Keep Communicating Retirement is not a one-size-fits-all category. Everyone is different: We all have different work experiences, risk levels, and goals for retirement. Your retirement plan should always reflect those unique differences. The only way INGREDIENTS

Retirement planning is a very personal experience. A smart retirement plan demands focus on how you’ll be able to fulfill your own needs for decades to come. Unfortunately, this means it’s easy for people to get inside their own heads when planning for retirement, which can then result in accidentally sabotaging their own efforts. Here are three steps to help you get out of your own way when it comes to your financial retirement plan. Learn to See All the Angles Many clients we see are well-versed in one aspect of retirement. However, this usually means their retirement plan isn’t balanced, because they’re missing a lot of other important pieces. There’s more to retirement than investing, growing, and preserving your wealth. You should also be ready to learn about minimizing taxes in retirement, long-term care options, legacy/ estate planning, and so much more.

to do this successfully is through regular communication with your financial advisor.

The future is unpredictable. Your communication must be frequent

throughout every year because tax laws change, life-changing events happen, and plans need to be tweaked and updated. This means it is highly important that you feel comfortable discussing money with your advisor and that you completely understand everything the advisor suggests. If your current financial advisor isn’t someone you can call to ask any question and get a reliable answer, then it’s time to find someone new. At Wolf Retirement Navigation, it’s our responsibility to stay current in the areas that affect those who are nearing or already in retirement. Call 904-232-8760 to learn how to get out of your own way and into a better retirement future.

Plus, the nearby hiking trails through the redwoods offer a free added experience.
