Thank you to all the parents and carers who engaged with our Year 9 PCM on Wednesday. Teachers really enjoyed the opportunity to talk one to one about students’ progress. We hope that it was useful and will help students and families reflect on their option choices next term. Students have taken part in a number of trips

this week. We hosted a music workshop for our Year 11 students to practise their performance skills. We also welcomed back one of our alumni, Dr Matilda Scott, who spoke about her fascinating career as a clinical psychologist. Our Year 11 students had the opportunity to think of alternative pathways by hearing from two apprentices at Cisco. Our Spanish A Level students enjoyed a visit to the BFI for a workshop on award winning Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. Our Photography students visited the Taylor Wessing Photography Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery before an afternoon taking their own pictures on the Southbank. A huge thank you to all the parents and carers who have supported the school PTA in our recent fundraising efforts, not only through generous donations via our Kindlink but also at our Christmas Tree and Preloved Uniform Sale last weekend. As we approach the end of term our festive celebrations continue. Tonight we have our Carol Concert at St Augustine’s Church Whitton, next week we have our Christmas lunch and Christmas Jumper Day fundraiser. We have also launched a Christmas appeal running a Collection 4 Clothes appeal. Further details can be found below. Sending our warmest wishes for a Happy Hanukkah to all our students celebrating Hanukkah this week.

Christmas is a time of meaning and magic for many of us. However, for some, Christmas isn’t always the joy-filled season that we often think it should be. It can be a time of clutter, chaos and noise. Our calendars and our brains are as full as our fridges, over-stuffed with festive activities, people to see and things to do. We feel forced to buy things we can’t afford because we don’t want to be scrooges or let our family feel like they’re going without. Christmas is a time for family and enjoying each other’s company but for many of us it’s more a reminder of loved ones who can’t be with us.Sometimes we feel guilty for struggling and not appreciating what we have. The website GirlGangStrong has a blog 12 Days of self-care for the holidays , including being creative or carrying out random acts of kindness, that can be useful for parents and teens alike to keep festive friction at bay.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

We have had a successful week in Year 8. 8FAD should be commended for their work helping out on reception the last couple of weeks. From all reports, they have been a great help to the admin team and their efforts have been much appreciated. Last week the Year 8/9 Basketball Team competed in a tournament and were able to finish runners up. The students displayed great sportsmanship and effort throughout the event. It was excellent to see so many Year 8s represented. A big congratulations to Olivia D, Keira E, Karis C, Lily F, Freda L and Marwah B. The hard work didn’t stop there for our Basketballers as a day after their tournament they faced a play off against Christ’s. Unfortunately the U14 team lost their league match v Christ’s, with a final score of 12-24. They were a tough opposition and the team did well to keep scoring baskets as Christ’s had a very strong defence. Well done to everyone who played. Today a number of students have spent the day at St. Augustine’s Church where they are busy rehearsing for the Carol Concert taking place later tonight. We hope everyone has a lovely evening at this event. Congratulations to Evelyn B in 8EMU who has gained a Merit in her Grade 4 Piano exam! Next week we will be having our Year 8 Celebration Awards. This is a great chance for the Year 8s to be celebrated with awards based on our three core values (enjoy, achieve, empower). It is always a great event as so many of the students are truly happy for their peers’ success. As we are building towards the Celebration Assemblies, it is always worthwhile to take a look at the current form leaders of epraise points. A big congratulations is in order for first placed 8EMU, followed by 8EFR. It is important to note, 8SGZ were able to achieve the most epraise points last week, could an unlikely comeback be on the cards? We will find out at the Awards Assembly next week! On Thursday 14 December, we have an extremely festive day for Year 8 with the Christmas lunch and the opportunity to wear a Christmas jumper over their uniform in place of the usual school jumper. Students and their families are kindly requested to make a donation either via ParentPay or our JustGiving page, with all proceeds going to Save the Children. Please note that if your child does not wish to partake in the Christmas lunch on this day, they should purchase food at break instead.

KS3 GREEK MYTHOLOGY WORKSHOP

We are very excited about a unique opportunity to work with Dr Efi Spentzou at Royal Holloway University of London in an exploration of Greek mythology in a three part weekly workshop series starting after school on Monday 22 January. The workshop will focus on interactive activities, debates about the balance between civilization and nature giving the students an opportunity to channel their creativity into imagining new green areas in our school grounds. Students from KS3 are invited to apply before 20 December. Spaces are limited so please encourage your child to complete an application on their tutor group Google Classroom explaining why they want to attend.

Please contact us with any queries or problems you may have.
