charm, etc. So, in some wonderful way, it added to God’s beauty and lovableness, that Jesus was made perfect through suf ferings, so that He might lead His brethren the same way^—the way o f the cross—that enhances the beauty and glory o f our God. * * * Rotherham’s translation of Ephesians 4:25 is.very helpful: “Wherefore, putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor”—or, as Rotherham has it, “Wherefore, stripping off what is false;” * * * (1) For the SINSTR ICKEN : “ Son, be o f good cheer; thy sins are forgiven thee” (Mt. 7:2). Who shall adequately express, the joy of pardon ! But here is infinitely more. Here is relationship also —son ; glorious grace, (2) For the FEAR FUL: Mark 6 , "Be o f good cheer : it is I ; be not afraid." (3) For the TR IED : John 16:33, “ Be o f good cheer, I have overcome the 'world.” In 1 Pet. 2 :18 servants are directed to be subject to their masters, even to those who f are “froward.” The Greek word means “ crooked.” In like manner the mas-r ter is to deal with “ crooked” servants. * * * Intermediate state o f the believér: 1 . Conscious existence (Lk. 16:25), “H e is comforted.! 2. Blessing (Phil. 1:23), “Far better.” 3. Companionship (2 Cor. 5:8), “ With Christ." ■ * * * Moffatt gives Rom. 14:13, “ So let j us stop criticising each other.” The root meaning of the word “judge” is “to sift,” and so “to criticize.” The word is used 113 times in the New Testament, and five times translated “ condemn.” According to this Mt. 7 :1 would teach that we are never to “condemn” our brother—but cf. Lk. 6 :37. * * * “Made meet” in Col. 1 :12 is one word in the Greek. It is the word Jesus used when He said “It is enough” (Lk. 12:38). Paul used it in 1 Cor. 2 :16, where it reads : " Who is sufficient?” Christ is our “ suffi ciency.” He is enough for us. v—---------------- !--- 9—B POINTERS FOR PREACHERS p — I— —— ■------------------- :------------ 4 An ideal preacher must be an ideal Christian. — o — < One ounce o f sincerity is worth a mil lion tons of affectation or logic. —o— “Memory is a wonderful treasure chest to the man who knows how to pack it.” “ Prepare your prayers by preparing yourselves.”—Spurgeon. — o — . “ Those who live in hovels must be made subjects o f tenderest care just the same as those who live in mansions. people would arrive at the same .exact number, because there are so many pas sages and texts containing double prom-' ises; but you are well within the mark if you say there are about 5,000 promises of God in the Old and New Testaments.” * * * There are 30 references to be thankful in Paul’s Epistles. Is not all sin the re sult o f ingratitude? Cicero said:. “Grati tude is the mother of all virtues.” * * * Dr. John McNeill pointed out in a re cent sermon that the word “workman ship” in Eph. 2:8 literally means “poem” —'"Ye are God’s poem.” The Greek word is poiema, a product. From it comes the Latin poema, meaning “to compose,” and so “a composition,” and especially one of which the language is highly imaginative. It is an interesting thought that the be liever is “God’s poem”—-the creation of His mind. * * * That Is a very striking word in Heb. 2:10, “ it became Him.” W e speak of clothes becoming a wearer, by which we mean they enhance her beauty, add to her
B I BLE BR I E F S <( The R. V. rendering o f Col; 3 :15 is, "Let the peace o f Christ arbitrate in your, hearts.” War. in any form is un friendly to growth in godliness..' Let Christ be the Arbitrator and peace must ensue. * * * A recent writer says: “ God never plan ned that man should be self-supporting.” Take the statement in the light of Phil. 4:13. V * * * It is important to observe that in Mt. 5: 22 , the words “without a cause” do not occur in the Greek. Another significant omission is the word “easily” in 1 Cor. 13:5. * * * A young English clergyman, who some years ago went carefully through the Bible to find out how many promises it contained, found that there were eight short books having no promises at all, but that in the whole Bible there were 4,939 promises. He said: “ Perhaps no two
