Paul’s Hymn of Love By D r . C harles R. E rdman

fessor McClain has done this in a most helpful way. He gives an abridged out line and then an articulated one. His method is to ask a question which brings out the main thought o f the section and then to answer it by outlining the mate rial of that particular section. His -outline of the argument is very simple and help ful. W e are sure that many will find it a real help to the understanding o f the development of thought in this master piece o f the New Testament, Price 25c. Published by Biola Book Room, Los Ang eles, Calif. H i- J . M. M. — o — After It’s Kind The First and Last Word on Evolution By B aron C. N elson This little book is a thesis which was presented for the degree of Master of Theology at PrinCeton Theological Semi nary. It is not so bad as the title really seems at first sight. By the first and last word on Evolution is not meant the final deliverance, but refers to the decree o f the Creator in Genesis and the latest decla rations o f Scientists in our own day. It does not mean that the author has spoken the last word, but he compares the first word, with its implications, with the facts brought before us by the latest writers on Evolution. It is a book of 144 pages and shows the best arguments for special creation and the lines along which the ordinary argu ments for evolution are made. It is well written and is a good, little book to put into the hands of young people who are troubled regarding the questions raised by Evolution. ; ,s—J. M. M ., Published by Augsburg Publishing House, Minneapolis. Price $1.50. He Stooped and Wrote He stooped and wrote in the sand, But the tracing was lost in a day. He stooped and wrote in the hearts of men, And the writing will last alway. Yet ever we seek to continue pur fame In the records that crumble and mold, When a single stamp on the heart o f a man W ill’ last till the ages grow old. Shrinking from Service “ For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds” (Heb. 12:3). What if He had been ‘‘wearied’’ and left but one thing undone! If He had shrunk and failed, what sensation in heaven—hell—earth! Let His followers, when tempted to shrink from service and to say it is too much, go and look at H im ! He is the grand transcendent example, to show that a good work must be gone through with. “ Do Your Bit” If any. little word o f mine May make a life the brighter, If any little song of mine May make a heart the lighter— God help me speak the little word, And take my bit o f singing And drop it in some lonely vale To set the echoes ringing!

the words “ sheol” and “hades.” He fol lows these words through the entire Bible and makes clear the connections in which they are used. The answers to many questions that have puzzled godly souls, will be found in this book. Hades is shown to be the equivalent o f the Old Testament word “sheol,” designating the place to which all departing spirits went prior to the Saviour’s resurrection. Both words, unfortunately, are rendered “hell” in the King James version, whereas hell, as the future place o f punishment, is clearly distinguished by other words. Mr. Clark shows that various activities are represented as taking place in hades, whereas in the grave there is no knowl edge. The ascension o f Christ emptied hades of the spirits of the redeemed who had awaited the atonement in the Para dise section of the spirit world, so that henceforth the ^spirits o f the saved go immediately to Paradise above, while the unsaved await the judgment in hades. Those who desire a concise study on these subjects will do well to invest 50c in the book.- Publisher, Wm. E. Clark. ' B. — o — The Fortunate Calamity By “ P ans ® (I sabella M. A lden ) Here we have a wholesome story which draws many lessons, notable among which is thoughtfulness o f others’.; We are shown how to become Christians and the Christian life is made attractive. The story deals with the life of a family con sisting o f father, mother, a son, three daughters and an invalid aunt. Many valuable lessons in home life may be taught young folks through such clean literature. The book has 272 pages, good type, and is published by Lippincott Co., of Phila delphia and London, for $1.75. —O. G. B. — o — - What to Preach The Warrack Lectures for 1926 By H enry S loane C offin It requires a good deal of courage on the part o f an American to go over to Scotland to tell them what to preach. Dr. Coffin undertook to do this and in doing it said some very pertinent and important things. He deals with Expository, Doc trinal, Ethical, Pastoral and Evangelistic preaching. On each subject he has help ful things to say. Nevertheless, the book presents the liberal and modernistic point o f view and contains many things that are, in our humble judgment, not calcu lated to strengthen or enrich the, gospel ministry. For example, while Dr. Coffin emphasizes with great force the impor tance of doctrinal preaching, his attitude toward the Bible as a reliable and abso lutely authentic record o f the things we think we ought to preach, is not calcu lated to produce such faith as is necessary to that passionate preaching that has changed things in the great crises o f the Church. M c C lain The Epistle to the Romans is one of the most gripping pieces of logic to be found in all the literature of the world. It requires a good deal o f courage to undertake to outline its argument and thought in thirty pages. However, Pro

Many have undertaken to write on this immortal hymn, and much that has been said has been very helpful. Yet, as we read Dr. Erdman’s little book on this hymn of thé ages, we feel that it helps us to understand it a little better and sends us back again to the thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians with a sincere longing to see this wondrous word sung into the heart o f the Church o f Jesus Christ in these restless, and contentious days. Dr. Erdman is always helpful but nevèr more so than in this little book on the thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians. Published by Fleming H. Revell. ■ - J . M. M, —o— ■ ' Guidance Through Life’s Contradictions B y D on O. S helton , LL.D. What one o f us has not asked why God permitted certain trials and testings to come? Do we not often think our lot is a very difficult one? We are tempted to think God has forsaken us and is letting more troubles come our way than is just. So we are greatly indebted to Mr. Shel ton for a new book which sets forth life’s contradictions in a vital way. It shows us how God deals with us through the ' ‘crook” in our lives. The pages are full o f the apparent con tradictions in the lives o f prominent Christian workers, and lessons resulting are a real blessing to the reader. Much Scripture is quoted and made to live for 'us. W e highly commend these messages to all whose faith is being tested by sorrows, disappointment or other ad verse circumstances. The book is published by the National Bible Institute, New York City, o f which institution Mr. Shelton is the president. Price $1.00. —O. G. B. —o— Pulpit Mirrors By E dwin H. B yington This contribution from the Homiletical Department of Gordon College is not run in the ordinary Homiletical groove. It is different and very suggestive. We are sure that many ministers will see themselves in these mirrors held up by Professor Byington and will be encour aged to lay. aside some o f the things that are making their ministry ineffective. The applications o f the principles em ployed in the stories told are suggestive and constructive. While the book is interesting and full o f suggestions, it is not likely to ever become a textbook on this subject. Not withstanding, it is a definite contribution and well worth a careful reading. Pub lished by Geo. H. Doran Co., N. Y. Price $2.00. :j§H|-J . M. M. —o— The Gates of Hades By R ev . W illiam E dward C lark W e are glad to recommend this small volume dealing with the state of the dead, to the careful consideration of Bible stu dents. Much confusion has existed over the subjects o f hell, sheol (or hades), and the grave, because o f unfortunate renderings in the English. Pastor Rus sell took advantage o f the situation to carry out his teachings o f annihilation and denial o f future punishment. Mr. Clark goes back to the original text so far as possible and shows the meaning of
