EN BREF • BRIEFS BURN PERMIT SUSPENSION Alfred-Plantagenet Township has suspended approval of new burn permits for the duration of the pandemic situation. Residents who want to have a campfire for backyard barbecue purposes are still allowed but only dry wood fuel is allowed and the campfire must not be larger than one cubic metre, including the height of the flames. Open fires for spring yard work cleanup are not allowed. – Gregg Chamberlain TREES FOR FREE The South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) is preparing its annual Community Free Tree Days program for 2020. The SNC is contacting all municipal govern- ments, within the watershed region, to arrange for host places and days in May. The SNC will give away seedlings to homeowners to promote improvement of the tree cover for the watershed region. The first deaths due to COVID-19 are confirmed for the Prescott-Russell region. Two residents at the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Plantagenet have died as a result of complications related to COVID-19. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) confir- med the deaths in an email news release sent out to local media. “I am saddened by the news,” said Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, EOHU chief medical officer. “On behalf of the Board of Health and all EOHU staff, I am offering our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased residents.” A woman in her 70s and a man in his 80s died at the local nursing home over the first weekend of May. They died of complications from the disease on May 3. The nursing home is dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak which affected eight residents and three staff members. The EOHU is doing priority testing of all 17 long-term care facilities within its jurisdiction and will also focus on priority testing of 35 seniors retirement centres along with other group home lodging operations within both the Five Counties region and the City of Cornwall. The EOHU is also focusing its attention on assessment testing for all the emergency daycares that the provincial government has

Dr. Roumeliotis also noted that he would like to see a secondary testing schedule for all long-term care facilities, seniors’ homes, and group home operations after the first round of assessments is done. “I would be very quick to look at (those) priorities,” he said.
