The private tness market remains broadly balanced between independent operators and larger multi-site chains, but underlying dynamics point to increasing structural pressure on the independent segment. While independents account for roughly half of all private sector sites, they represent a higher share of closures, indicating a gradual shift in competitive balance. This imbalance reects the structural advantages held by larger operators. Chains benet from scale efciencies, stronger brand recognition and greater access to capital, enabling more consistent investment in facilities, pricing and member experience. In contrast, independent operators

often face tighter margins and more limited capacity to adapt to changing market conditions. The result is a market in which survival is increasingly linked to either scale or clear differentiation. Independents that succeed are typically those able to establish a distinct local proposition, while those without a clear positioning are more exposed to competitive pressure. Although the overall structure remains stable, the direction of travel is becoming clearer. Competitive intensity is gradually reinforcing the advantages of scale, increasing the importance of strategic positioning across the independent segment.
