THE SHAPE OF SUPPLY
Market Concentration: Top 10 Operator Influence
While the private market remains fragmented overall, a small number of large operators exert signicant inuence, particularly in terms of membership and market value. The top 10 operators account for around 30% of sites, but capture well over half of both members and market value, highlighting the impact of scale within the sector. This concentration is most evident in member base and revenue generation, where larger operators benet from national reach, brand strength and more advanced operating models. In contrast, their share of total sites remains comparatively lower, reinforcing the continued presence of a long tail of smaller operators across the market. Over time, this balance has remained broadly stable, with no meaningful shift in site ownership or overall concentration levels. However, the gap between physical presence and market inuence persists. Larger operators are able to capture a greater share of demand without expanding their share of sites, reecting more efcient, high-volume models. The result is a dual structure: a concentrated group of large operators driving a signicant share of market value, alongside a broad base of smaller providers. This dynamic continues to shape competition, investment and strategic positioning across the sector.
