Gym participation across the UK is concentrated within a relatively narrow set of demographic groups, rather than evenly distributed across the population. Engagement is strongest among mainstream, family- oriented and suburban segments, alongside a signicant presence of urban renters, reecting the accessibility and positioning of much of the current tness offer. These groups typically benet from stable routines, proximity to facilities and price points aligned with mass-market provision, all of which support regular engagement. In contrast, more rural, lower- income and less connected communities remain underrepresented, highlighting a persistent gap between overall population structure and gym usage. Differences between the public and private sectors further reinforce this pattern. Private operators tend to attract a more concentrated mix of mainstream and family-oriented segments, while public facilities engage a broader and more diverse demographic base, including more rural and lower-income groups. This imbalance highlights a clear opportunity for the sector.
