PARTICIPATION INDEX

While overall participation continues to grow, signicant gaps remain across key demographic groups. Gym usage does not fully reect the underlying population, with several segments materially under-indexing relative to the UK average, highlighting a clear structural opportunity to broaden participation. Participation is strongest among afuent, suburban and established households, which signicantly over-index against the national benchmark. In contrast, a number of groups fall well below average participation levels, particularly rural communities, older populations and more transient renters. These segments face a combination of barriers, including accessibility, affordability and relevance of offer, that continue to limit engagement despite

representing a substantial share of the population. Regional variation further amplies this opportunity. Differences in local demographic composition mean that some areas are naturally better aligned to current provision, while others show a clear mismatch between population prole and participation levels. For example, urban markets with higher concentrations of rental-based populations do not always translate into proportionate levels of engagement, while more suburban regions remain closely aligned to existing provision. Closing this gap will be critical to sustaining long- term growth. Expanding participation will depend not only on geographic reach, but on adapting product, pricing and environments to better engage underrepresented groups and unlock latent demand.
