A s we head into the first big long weekend of summer in Canada with July 1 st , and our U.S. friends to the south getting ready for July 4 th read our “Top 10 Destinations” to celebrate both of these amazing holidays. Check it out and see if your favorite place to watch the fireworks in July made our list. Speaking of getting outdoors, we sit down with Red Paddle Co GM, Andrew Meakin and learn how a trend that first hit the waters of the UK in 2008 as “a bit of an idea,” has become a whole new segment of the market for outdoor sports and recreational equipment, plus it would be a great way to enjoy the fireworks out on the water. When you get back it is time for your favorite sociable and we can’t think of a better place to do that then Mount Arrowsmith Brewing. Most think that starting a new business venture is difficult and can, at times, be nail-biting and hectic. The uncertainty, the economic pressure, the lack of recognition, finding a spot in the marketplace and holding on for dear life. Many businesses fail in their first year or two, caving in to these pressures. Then there’s the Mount Arrowsmith Brewery. They swung open their doors in April 2017 and by September of the same year, they were awarded Gold and Silver medals for two of their beers and were named Brewery of the Year by the British Columbia Beer Awards. We chat with Matt Hill about the family-run brewery, its beginnings a mere year ago, and it’s almost immediate success. We move from talking beer in British Columbia to a few miles from the banks of the Mississippi, a little over an hour drive south of St. Louis sits the unassuming City of Perryville, Missouri. It is a city that prides itself on its foundation in faith and small-town values. In fact, it is the birthplace of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and the historic seat of the American Vincentians (Perryville actually had the first seminary west of the Mississippi). Many do not know this, but Concordia University was founded in Perryville and there are upwards of 35 small country

churches throughout the county.

So why you ask is a business magazine covering a Middle-America city with the population of approximately 8,400? Well that is easy, it is the City’s impressive economic development history. Plus, the fact that, unlike most places in North America, Perryville currently has more jobs than people to fill them. What’s your riding style? Is it cruising and distance paddling? Is it racing? Surfing? Whitewater? Windsurfing? Maybe yoga? Whatever it is, Red Paddle Co has an inflatable stand-up paddleboard (SUP) for

W ith all the negative comments in the media about the state of the Canadian economy, you might think we were in trouble however, that is not what the actual numbers are telling us. As most fear the impacts President Donald Trump’s “make America great again” will have on the Canadian economy, Canadian exports hit new highs. Despite fear of a collapse in construction jobs and business anxiety over rising minimum wages, Canada’s unemployment rate continues to stick at 40-year lows. A poll of those economists by the financial news service Bloomberg shows they expect to see unemployment stayed at that low level of 5.8 per cent while the economy cranked out another 22,000 jobs.

T he federal competition watchdog says he wants to “shine a light” on Canada’s broadband internet provid- ers with the public’s comments on a market that is pre- dominantly served by traditional phone and cable companies. “There are few products more vital to Canada’s economic future than broadband. We want to shine a light on poten- tial competitive issues in a sector at the heart of our daily lives,” Commissioner of Competition John Pecman said in a recent statement. More than 550 companies offer alternatives to traditional telephone and cable companies however, 2016 data showed that only 13 per cent of Canada’s retail internet subscriptions were with the alternatives. So, the bureau says it’s explor- ing ways to make the broadband internet sector more com- petitive, including a change to regulations, easier switches between providers and more informed consumer choice. Representatives of two Canadian consumer advocacy groups said they hoped that the bureau’s study will lead to lower prices.

P rime Minister Trudeau’s legacy legislation legalizing weed is going to happen, but the stakes are high, but the fact that this is a transformative initiative isn’t really in doubt even with meddling senators, confusing laws and troubling new health research. Trudeau’s marijuana reforms are undeniably bold and a done deal, leaving the provinces to figure out the details and set guidelines on regulating sales. “Ottawa has just very conveniently said, ‘We’ll legalize cannabis, you prov- inces figure out how to do it,’ ” says Blaine Pedersen, the growth, enterprise and trade minister in Manitoba’s Con- servative government. Legalizing pot is a defining element in Trudeau’s persona, too. He announced his intention in B.C. in the summer of 2013—his first major policy pledge as Liberal leader. “Tax it, regulate,” he said then and is doing now as leader.

While home values and sales activity in Canada’s largest urban markets have softened, demand for recreational properties remains robust in most regions, believe it or not the average price of a recreational home in Canada is expected to rise 5.8 per cent to $467,764 by the end of Sep- tember, according to a new survey by Royal LePage. By Jody Euloth S ummer is finally here. And now that it is, do you believe that all business development is going to come to a screaming halt? Do you already have a frustrated outlook that the sales slump starts once the warm air hits? If this is your thinking, or that of your sales team, then it’s time to change your mindset. You are going to defeat yourself and miss out on a lot of good business opportunities during the coming months. Having interactions with lots of senior level decision makers daily, I know the ones in my network aren’t taking the summer off. Will some take vacation? Of course! Will some choose to work remotely? Abso- lutely. But the ones I know are putting in work because there’s work to be done. I also know plenty of c-suite executives who only vacation during the winter months. So, there is no excuse: the summer slump is non-existent, unless you want it to be. I can remember working for Canon Canada selling multi-functional devices early in my career. It was an outside sales role, selling B2B, which provided some of the best sales experience available. For a short time, until they corporately let him go right before the holiday season, I had a manager who I’d say was quirky at best. A bit socially awkward, he took his selling very serious. I’ll always remember Friday after- noon as his favorite time to hit the streets to go make sale calls. As a youth, how annoying was this when all I wanted to do was hit a patio. I can remember mentally rolling my eyes when he’d want to go together on these calls. At the time, it was annoying. In hindsight, the Friday afternoon drop ins came to be some of my most productive and successful sales meetings. Energy was high and most of my clients were relaxed and in a good mood. Now, the cold call drop ins may be an interruptive and archaic tactic, but a phone call and email work the same way. The summertime sunshine and Friday afternoons produce positive energy that you want to take advantage of. Leverage the good moods and have an extra touch point with your clients. The positive energy is contagious and encourages optimal selling. The number one key to avoiding a slump is in understanding your client’s buying cycle and when they may be out of the office for an extended period. Experienced sales people will communicate well before the summer months set in to get this information. From both sides, being upfront on when decisions must be made and having transparent deadlines helps determine whether the sale will close or not. In the spon- sorship and marketing landscape, many of the national brands set their budgets for the following year in early fall. That means that opportunities must be sold before September before they lock in and make decisions about allocating funds. This makes the summer months’ prime time to position yourself. So, go ahead, stay focused and set yourself up for second half sales success of 2018 by doing the work this summer. The idea of the summer slump is only a myth. Morgan Chase food and retail analyst Ken Goldman told CNBC that the packaged food sector is not likely to grow. “I would count on very limited, you know, zero percent, maybe 1 percent growth with population, if they’re lucky,” Goldman said. Packaged food brands continue to struggle as specialty food stores, fresh food and online retailers such as Amazon, continue to take market share and this trend is not showing any sign of changing soon and online giants continue to battle it out online.

Goldman said most packaged food companies even the iconic ones like Kraft and Campbells, “would be thrilled to have a positive number for their organic sales.”

These comments come on the heels of a report that Kraft Heinz is interested in buying Campbell Soup. But, Goldman said Campbell has struggled of late and even acquired more debt in its efforts to expand. More reason why Goldman said he doesn’t think the deal is likely to happen. Kraft, he said, would be “taking on an awful lot of risk in doing this.”

We will have to keep an eye on what is stirring up between Kraft and Campbells.

By David MacDonald F or this one, ultra-low-cost airlines like Miramar, Florida-based Spirit Airlines (formerly Charter One) and Calgary-Alber- ta-headquartered Swoop Airline got a pass. A recently released survey conducted by JD Power & Associates shows that jetsetters and snowbirds alike are happier with traditional airlines than they were a year ago. That’s according to CNBC’s Leslie Josephs, who reported in late May that the “survey found passengers’ satisfaction with the region’s North America airlines rose six points from a year earlier to 762 on a 1,000-point scale with the biggest improvements in satisfaction with aircraft, deplaning and baggage claim and the reservation system.” Frequent fliers and turkey pilgrims in the land of the free and the home of the brave are, however, getting the grins more often than their neighbours to the north when they head above the clouds. SeaTac, Washington-based Alaska Air scored the highest in the JD Power & Associates survey with 775 points followed by Atlanta, Georgia-based Delta Airlines with 767 points. Montreal, Que-

bec-headquartered Air Canada came in ahead of fourth-place American Airlines by five points with a score of 734. The “Fly the Friendly Skies” people, Chicago, Illinois-based United Airlines, came in last amongst traditional carriers with 708 points. Michael Taylor, the man at the helm of JD Power & Associates travel unit, remains adamant that both American and United have “made strides in the past five years,” Josephs reported. It’s important to keep in mind, Josephs emphasized, that “JD Power wrapped up last year’s survey just before a string of public relations disasters for United that started with the violent dragging of pas- senger David Dao off of a plane flying for the airline in April 2017. Several high-profile animal deaths and mix-ups followed.” Among lost-cost airlines, Dallas, Texas-based South came out on top in the US while Calgary, Alberta- based WestJet bested its Canadian competition.

Feeling stuck can be debilitating. There’s something going on in our life or business that we know has to change, but we lack the courage to act. We tell ourselves that we don’t know what to do. What we really mean is that we’re scared of what might happen if we do act. To make matters worse, this fear is contagious. Instead of feeling uncertain or anxious about one challenge, we start to question everything. These emotions can have a devastating impact on you and your business. So what can you do about it? Embrace the Challenge Those moments when you know you’re not happy where you are, yet don’t quite know what to do next—aren’t just common, they’re necessary. For an entrepreneur, they’re a signal that you want more from your business, a reminder that you shouldn’t have to settle. Don’ t waste time second-guessing past decisions

I hesitate to waste words (and your time) explaining why this is pointless! Stop listening to that inner critic that is berating you for making a dumb decision. You did your best, and more importantly, you can’t change the past. Move on. Figure out what ’s really bothering you and what needs to change The more stressed people are, the harder it is to get them to clearly commu- nicate. I ask a simple question like “what would have to change for you to be happy,” and then sit back and wait for the long rambling discourse. And there’s a good chance the answer to the question is nowhere to be found in all those words. When I get stuck trying to figure out what’s really bothering me I fall back on my core values. I value family, friends, health, respect, integrity and the environment. If I’m unhappy, then something in my life is threatening one of those core values. Nothing else has the power to make me unhappy. Your job is to figure out which of your core values is threatened, and by what or whom. Know this, if you want to be happy then you have to eliminate threats to your core values. Doing nothing is not an option. Know that there are always choices “I think there is choice possible to us at any moment, as long as we live.” (Muriel Rukeyser) This is one of my favorite quotes. If you’re not happy there isalways something you can do to change it. It’s just that sometimes those changes are scary. Years ago, I was stuck in a rut. My business was making enough to put food on the table, but not much more. I was working long hours and didn’t see much opportunity to increase sales of my current products. My gut told me that my business was at risk if something didn’t change.

So, I took on a new product line (something that was very dif- ferent but seemed to have a lot of potential). Eight months later I realized that I was spending 80% of my time on the new product line, and hadn’t made a single sale. Something had to change. I decided that I had two choices 1. Drop the new product and go back to the basics. 2. Drop all my old products and focus on the one product line that had the most potential. What ’s the worst thing that could happen? I asked myself what was the worst thing that could happen if things didn’t work out. Choice #1- Drop the new product and go back to the basics:This was the safest choice as my short-term income would stay the same and expenses would be reduced. But it felt like I would be getting back on a treadmill with little hope of long-term success. It would be a slow and lingering decline, but the end seemed fairly certain. Choice #2- Drop all my old products and focus on the

one new product line that had the most potential:That idea scared the hell out of me. If it didn’t work out I was definitely going out of business. I had enough money in the bank to finance operations for 3-6 months, but that was it. Trust your instincts “What would you do if you were in my shoes?” As a business coach, this is a question I’m often asked. The reality is that ninety-nine percent of the time our clients know what they should do. They feel it down deep. But faced with making a choice that has the potential to change their life, they get scared. I decided to go all in with the new product line. Two months later we made our first major sale and never looked back. We sold millions. It was a gut decision. Decide to do something I made a big change and got big results. But the same prin- ciples apply, even when we make smaller changes. If you don’t know what to do,just do something. Stop trying to second guess every possible outcome. The risk of doing nothing is probably much worse.

yourself mid-job when the company runs into the Canadian Revenue Agency or financial trouble and can no longer finish. Typically, when you deal with a company or individ- ual who does not collect or remit taxes there will be a lack of official paper communication. Here is what you risk: 1) No permit: no municipal inspection and no over- sight for your project. 2) No invoice: no paper trail and, usually, no warranty. 3) No signed contract: potential disagreements may become your word against theirs. 4) No liability insurance: you could become respon- sible if something goes wrong and this could void your home insurance. 5) No workers compensation: you could be held accountable for worker’s injuries and be subject to personal lawsuits. Something you must ask yourself when you hire a renovator/contractor who will work for cash is, “If this person is willing to cheat the government and lie on their tax forms, when will they cheat and lie to me?” It is not a matter of if, but simply a matter of when you will be cheated. I hope you have found this article informative and not overly dogmatic. I want the public to be informed and protect themselves from people and companies who could possibly do them harm. Please hire a reputable company, have signed con- tracts, ask for references, and ask for proof of insur- ance.

The answer is, for most renovators, “Yes we certain- ly will accept cash as payment.” The meaning often becomes misconstrued when the individual means; will you take cash and not charge taxes? The answer to this question, for trusted professional renovators is, “No, we charge and remit taxes on all projects and all our dealings are open and transparent.” Let’s be honest, nobody wants to pay more taxes than they need to pay, but I believe a wise man once said, “Give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s.” Taxes are a necessity as they pay for our municipal, provincial, and federal services such as health care, infrastructure, national defence, pensions, etc. It is always attractive to save money but at what cost? Tax evasion is illegal and punishable with fines and potential incarceration. Trusted, professional and honest contractors do not risk their business and the security of their family by committing fraud in order to earn a few extra dollars. I have been operating companies for others or myself for over 25 years and I have been asked, on many occasions if paying by cash would make the price better. I have always been able to reply, “No, we work above board and feel this is the best way to serve our clients.” I don’t believe I have ever lost a client by being honest and if I have, they were not the type of client with whom we wish to do business. Please remember, it is best to choose a renovator/con- tractor who collects and pays taxes or else you could find
