A

M y brother-in-law is an expert practical joker. Every year, he tries to come up with a fun April Fools’ prank to play on my sister. He even got away with the same trick for a few years in a row. He’d wake up early and tie a rubber band to the side sprayer on the sink — you know, those little mini-hoses that are used to wash vegetables and the like. Whenever my sister turned it on, she got doused. Eventually she wised up to the fact that it was coming. I guess my brother-in-law will have to come up with another creative, light-hearted prank for this year. Turns out, even the IRS gets in on the April Fools’ Day fun. Did you know April is National Stress Awareness Month? The fact that it’s the same month as tax day is surely somebody’s idea of a sick joke. Luckily April Fools’ Day is also in April, because laughter is one of the best ways to combat stress. In my line of work, we have to deal with serious, scary issues all the time. Car accidents can result in life-altering injuries. No one enjoys dealing with insurance or medical bills. We know that visiting our office or giving us a call is not something you planned on. Odds are, you’re not THE IMPORTANCE OF HUMOR ESPECIALLY DURING TIMES OF STRESS

I also think it’s important to foster an atmosphere of humor and brightness between our team members. Like I said earlier, we deal with rough, trying situations. If you don’t take time to break up the seriousness, it might be too much to bear. I’ve heard that people in traumatic and intense professions, like hospital workers and military personnel, tend to develop morbid senses of humor to help add some levity to their extremely serious work. I guess you could say we have our own version of the same concept. We certainly have more jokes about insurance than anyone needs or wants. In my personal life, there’s one jokester who stands above all the others: my youngest child, Zachary. Since his preschool days, he’s been the type of kid who is quiet for the most part but drops a perfectly timed zinger when you least expect it. I remember being called in by Zachary’s preschool teacher when I picked him up one day. The

teacher informed me that he’d used the word “damn,” and suggested I speak to him about it. When I did, he began to cry. I assured him it was no big deal and that he just shouldn’t use that word again.

“No matter how stressed, frazzled, or infuriated you feel, we’ll

thrilled to be making the call. You may even be having a pretty rotten day when we first meet you. We get it. No matter how stressed, frazzled, or infuriated you feel, we’ll approach you with care and compassion. Laughter often plays a huge role in building a real, meaningful relationship with our clients. If we can get you to crack a smile during a horrible time, we’re on the right track. Now don’t get me wrong, nobody expects the aftermath of a car accident to be a laugh riot, but sometimes when life is at its most hectic, all you can do is laugh and attempt to move forward.

approach you with care and compassion. Laughter often plays a huge role in building a real, meaningful relationship with our clients. If we can get you to crack a smile during a horrible time, we’re on the right track.”

“Well,” he replied, “you might want to tell Daddy that. I don’t think he knows it’s a bad word.”

Now who wouldn’t laugh at that?

BOOKS TO ENGAGE THE WHOLE FAMILY

— savannahs, jungles, and oceans — and features the wildlife living there. It’s worth a read simply to appreciate the colorful depictions of each animal. This book was written by Nicola Davies and illustrated by Petr Horácek. FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOLER: ‘THE NIGHT DIARY’ 12-year-old Nisha navigates her world after the partition of India creates the new country of Pakistan and her family is forced to leave their home. Her mother may be gone, but Nisha finds solace in writing nightly letters to her in her diary as she discovers what the future holds. Based on author Veera Hiranandani’s memories of her own family, this moving tale lets readers experience life through someone else’s eyes. FOR TEENS: ‘BRAZEN: REBEL LADIES WHO ROCKED THE WORLD’ While some might not think of comics as proper reading, Penelope Bagieu’s graphic novel forces reconsideration. Her clever, colorful artwork and engaging narrative take the reader through the biographies of 30 women, from Bette Davis and Mae Jemison to lesser-known but equally intriguing ladies like Giorgina Reid. All in all, this book provides a great way to get kids excited about history in an entertaining form.

Learning to read opens up a world of possibilities. When your child walks through the back of the wardrobe into Narnia with Lucy Pevensie or rides with Harry Potter on the train to Hogwarts, they connect to something beyond their own experiences. In the U.S., April 23 is World Book Day, and the date commemorates the deaths of legendary authors Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as the birth of author Vladimir Nabokov. World Book Day is the perfect time to sit down with your family and let yourself be transported to new worlds. So, here are three great stories to help you take young readers on brand-new adventures. FOR THE ELEMENTARY READER: ‘SONG OF THE WILD: A FIRST BOOK OF ANIMALS’ “Song of the Wild” makes a great read-aloud book for beginner readers because they can get lost in the beautiful artwork while you read the text. Written in prose and rhyming poems, this book showcases sprawling landscapes

UNDERHANDED TACTICS ADJUSTERS WILL USE TO POKE HOLES IN YOUR CLAIMS NO LAUGHING MATTER

The first place an adjuster may look to find errors in your claim is your Facebook page. Sounds crazy, right? It happens way more than you think because it’s surprisingly strong evidence. If you tell an adjuster you’re too injured to work but post photos of yourself lifting weights, the courts may see that as proof you’re exaggerating your injury. As such, it’s important to be mindful not only about what you post but also about how those posts can be perceived. Another common tactic is to ask you for a recorded statement. If this happens to you, you should politely decline. As friendly as the request may sound, the only goal of taking your statement is to use it against you. Speak to a lawyer before providing any information to an adjuster. The bottom line is that you should discuss your accident with an attorney before talking to an insurance adjuster. There’s too much at stake to risk hurting your claim for the sake of being friendly. You never know when a smiling adjuster has a knife hidden behind their back.

“They smiling in your face / All the time, they want to take your place,” Philly soul group The O’Jays sang in their classic “Back Stabbers.” If we were to adopt that lyric to be about insurance adjusters, it might go like this: They smiling in your face /All the time, they want to deny your claim. I’m not saying insurance adjusters take delight in denying claims or paying them out for pennies on the dollar. Most adjusters are well-meaning people just trying to do their jobs. Unfortunately, doing their job well often requires the use of shady tactics to poke holes in claims. Insurance companies lose money every time they pay out a claim. As businesses, they obviously don’t want to do that unless they have to. Whether or not you think this system is broken, we all have to live with it. When it comes to car accident claims, there’s a litany of dirty tricks adjusters will use to try and disprove the validity of your claim. People often fall prey to them unknowingly. To help save you from this unwanted fate, we want to share some of the strategies we’ve seen used against honest claimants.

OPENING DAY HAMBURGERS

THE HISTORY OF THE LOUISVILLE MEGA CAVERN Did you know that the largest building in Kentucky is underground? It’s over 4 million square feet and right here in Louisville. If you’re still stumped, it’s probably because you’re not thinking of the place I’m hinting at as a building at all. Any guesses yet? Yup, that’s right, I’m talking about the Louisville Mega Cavern. The cavern has become one of Louisville’s premier attractions, but it wasn’t initially meant for visitors at all. Before being reborn as a tourist attraction in the twenty-first century, the cavern served as the base of operations for Louisville Crushed Stone. Ralph Rogers founded the limestone mine in the 1930s, and it remained in operation through the early 1970s. The cavern is a remarkable feat of engineering. At 100 acres, it’s positively massive. As somebody who understands very little about construction, I find it mind-boggling that they were able to create the mine at all, let alone build it so well that it’s still rock-solid nearly a century later. While the cavern itself hasn’t gone anywhere, finding the ideal use for it has been a bit more stop and start. After Louisville Crushed Stone ceased operations, a group of investors sought to turn the property into an enormous high-security storage facility. It also saw use as a business park. In 2009, the Mega Cavern opened its first attraction, a Jeep tour of the tunnel. It was such a big hit that the owners have added even more options over the years. Today, you can take a zip line tour of the cavern, navigate a ropes course, or ride an electric bike through the tunnels. The space is so, ahem, cavernous that even those with claustrophobia won’t feel confined, despite being deep underground. The Louisville Mega Cavern is truly an attraction without compare. Who knew so much fun was hiding right beneath our feet? You can find more about its past and present at LousivilleMegaCavern.com. EXPLORING THE ROOTS OF THE CITY’S MOST UNIQUE ATTRACTION

SHHHHHHH!

IT’S NATIONAL LIBRARY WORKERS DAY!

W hether you have a card or not, libraries are an important part of our community. They serve as meeting places, research stations, employment centers, and local historical archives. They help kids and adults alike explore vast literary worlds and immense databases of knowledge — all for free! Behind every library is a dedicated staff of librarians, catalogers, assistants, and administrators who keep the system running smoothly. While it may not be the most well-known holiday, April 9 is National Library Workers Day (NLWD). As part of National Library Week, NLWD recognizes and celebrates the vital work performed by library staff. Librarians and their team do far more than simply place books on the shelf and shush noisy teenagers, after all. Library science is a multidisciplinary field that takes years of study to master. Today’s librarians have the skills of managers, IT specialists, documentarians, archivists, and educators — equipping them to help anyone from elementary students to doctoral researchers. These professionals can be an invaluable resource for anyone looking to delve into a particular topic, even if they don’t know where to begin. Just tell your local library worker what subject you’re interested in, and they can help you track down books, databases, magazine articles, and more.

How should you celebrate National Library Workers Day? Some groups, such as the students at the University of Arizona, go above and beyond by delivering balloons and signs to library branches across Tucson. More commonly, however, library branches ask their community members to vote for a “star” staffer. If a library worker has made a difference in your life, you can submit their name to the American Library Association by visiting Ala-Apa.org and clicking “Submit A Star!” Lastly, you can show your appreciation by visiting your local library and thanking these professionals. These important community centers only work because they do!
