NATIONAL PAYROLL WEEK

The CIPP’s future of payroll roundtable The CIPP launched National Payroll Week 2019 on Monday 2 September alongside the event’s main sponsors, Portfolio Payroll, with a joint hosted roundtable discussing the future of payroll. With some of the profession’s leading experts getting together to discuss the future of the profession we can be assured it will be a bright one. The CIPP’s networking drinks in London Following on from the roundtable the CIPP hosted their annual National Payroll Week drinks reception, hosted this year at The Savoy, London. Jason Davenport gave a wonderful speech at this invite-only event welcoming and thanking all for attending and discussing the meaning of National Payroll Week. To quote a section of Jason’s speech: “Thank you all for coming today, to help us celebrate the beginning of NPW19. The celebration of the profession is now in its 21st year – so these celebrations are for National Payroll Week coming of age – and we look forward to building on it in each consecutive year. “I have had the honour of serving the institute as a Board member for several years now and am very pleased to be holding the position of chair. It is my pleasure to be addressing you today and looking forward to a very special week. In education terms this is a very special week also as many school children return from holidays – my youngest joins his high school tomorrow – which is a big day for him – good luck to Patrick. “As professionals, this week is all about raising the profile of the industry and recognising the very significant part that is played by every payroll, pensions and reward professional and the role they play in keeping the wheels of industry turning by collecting and paying over many billions in taxes that are then distributed back through central and local government and quite literally enable the country to make the plans it does. “The Institute’s key role is in leading the industry, through education, training and membership. Our membership is key to us as an Institute, and this week is about recognising their contribution to industry and reaching others in the profession who are not yet members and encouraging them to join. “There are several individual membership roles on offer, based on experience and qualifications and we are extremely proud of the growing number of members who have attained Individual Chartered Status – I am pleased to see a number of those here with us today. With their expert opinion and input, we look for their insights to help us consider the future of payroll and indeed we have held a future of payroll roundtable earlier today to consider a number of key strategic topics that will affect the industry both now and in the years to come. “Today we have discussed how technology is changing the profession, considerations such as AI were debated and what skills and learning gaps may exist and how will they change and develop in the future and how are professionals adding strategic value to the business. “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our tutors…an incredible group of individuals who are dedicated to education and the development of others. It was great to see so many of them at tutor training this year and to welcome new tutors to the family. “I am joined here today with Cliff Vidgeon, Liz Lay, Vickie Graham, Helen Hargreaves, Stacey Graham, Lynne Rocks, Megan Dudley and Olivia Parkes. “We are also very lucky to be joined by a founder member – Chris Williams and also Trevor Lakin. Chris mentioned to me that she was listening to the Craig Charles show on Radio 2 on the way across London and he mentioned NPW – and how we should all be grateful for the support we receive from our payrollers – isn’t that fantastic.”

Scottish National Conference and Exhibition The evening before the Scottish National Conference kicked off, the CIPP, the event sponsors and the speakers enjoyed an exquisite dinner and drinks at hidden gem, Monteiths, in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. The CIPP staff Diana Bruce, Jill Bonehill, Jill Smith, Lynne Rocks, Olivia Parkes, Stacey Graham, Dr Sue Smith and Prerna Barthwal, were joined by Deborah Hill and Richard Campion from Ceridian, Elaine Gibson from Dataplan, Justine Riccomini from ICAS, John Dunham and Tim Fogden from Frontier Software, Michael Short and Phillip Cass from the Payroll Centre, Shaun Tetley from Portsmouth City Council, and Jason Davenport, CIPP chair. This pre-conference meal set a nice tone before the exciting day ahead.
