over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. ■ 43 . But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever shall be great among , you, shall be your minister: 44 . Our Lord was on His last journey to Jerusalem when the incidents we are about to study took place. The time was in March, A. D. 30. The place was somewhere between Samaria and Jericho. I. Jesus Foretells His Crucifixion, verses 32-34. Where were our Lord and His disciples going? Was this near the beginning or near the close o f His public ministry? How long had these disciples been under His teaching? What did He again announce to them? How many different items did He announce here in connection with His death? “Take each item separately and look up exactly how each was fulfilled. Six o f the seven are found ,in Mark 14 and IS. The seventh is found in Matthew 27. Who alone knows the minute details o f the future? The minuteness o f the prediction so perfectly fulfilled proves that Jesus was whom? How much o f an impression did His teachings about His sufferings make upon His disciples? See Luke 18:34. Why did they not understand Him? Had He ever told them before this o f His death? See Mark 8:31-38 and parallel passages, and Mark 9:30-32 and parallel passages. Was Jesus’ death a surprise to Him or was it something He anticipated and prepared for? Did He face it willingly or unwill­

ingly? I f He knew assuredly that it was coming, why did He not avoid it? What else did He foretell to His disciples at this time? Did the disciples grasp His teaching regarding His resurrection? Why not? When did they recall these teachings o f His? What value was there in recalling that He had foretold them? Is that as important a feature o f prophecy as know­ ing beforehand what is going to happen? II. James and John Seeking Honor, verses 35-45. Who were James and John ? What were they when they first met Jesus? What had Jesus called them to be? Would you con­ sider that a great honor for two fishermen?. What special honor had Jesus, further bestowed upon them while they had been with Him? Were they satisfied with all these? What did they ask o f Him at this time? What would you say o f the contrast between what they were thinking o f and what Jesus was thinking o f? Did . Jesus grant their request? Why not? Why did He not tell them that there is not going to be any right and left hand places in His glory? At whose disposal are they ?. What did He promise they should have? Was there anything at all that was good in the disciples’ request? What was wrong in it? Would it have been right or wrong o f Jesus to grant their request just
