Russell Rodeo generates plenty of action CANDICE VETTER candice.vetter@eap.on.ca

covered portions of three provinces and several states. Calf-roping is one aspect of the sport that still reflects reality. On some farms and ranches calves are lassoed from the back of well-trained horse by an experi- enced cowboy and while tied, are vaccinat- ed and castrated if needed. It is better for humans, calves and horses if the operation goes fast, which is where times of a few sec- onds originated. Rawhide Rodeo travels throughout North America, doing shows that are entertaining but also act as qualifiers for major rodeos and offer prize money. They have produced rodeos for almost 30 years and are recog- nized by official rodeo organizations. There was plenty of action around the chute at the Russell Stampede Day Ro- deo held at the Russell fairgrounds’ horse ring on Saturday night, September 22, when the Russell Agricultural Society hosted Rawhide Rodeo.

RUSSELL | Several hundred people turned out to the see Rawhide Rodeo show, host- ed by the Russell Agricultural Society last Saturday. Saturday night’s show started near sun- down with a parade of cowgirls on horses, followed by bullriding, steer throwing, bucking broncs, calf roping and barrel rac- ing. As always when working with animals who would just as soon hurt you, the ele- ment of unpredictably hovered in the air and several cowboys were limping by the end of the night. The muddy ring didn’t seem to affect times seriously as the winning barrel racer finished in 14.3 seconds. Two bullriders had long enough rides to qualify for the final. Clowns, who had the dangerous job of dis- tracting the bull or bronc so it doesn’t gore or stomp on a fallen cowboy, also provided comedy entertainment. The pickup riders for the show were there when needed. The evening finished with a dance to D.W. James and refreshments from the Russell Curling Club. The sport of rodeo gets its roots from the settlement of the Old West, when cow- boys rode the open range herding cattle on ranches, such as the Burns Ranch, that Kin Club raises over $19,000 RUSSELL | The Kin Club of Russell has only existed for a year, and their project, Kai- den’s Care Kits, is new too, but the club just raised $19,400 to help produce and deliver the Cystic Fibrosis kits for children. Kin leader Doug Anthony said Kaiden’s mother, Kin member Helen Meinzinger, was “blown away” by the participation and gen- erosity at the club’s first golf tournament at Anderson Links. The tournament was called Kaiden’s Classic Fore Cystic Fibrosis, and funds raised will support CF research and support for the nationwide pilot project, Kaiden’s Care Kits. Meinzinger invented the kits as an aid to parents who have a new baby or young child and have just discovered the child has CF. When she and her husband were told about their son Kaiden’s condition she was overwhelmed and didn’t know what she needed. So she created kits which contain everything, including information, that the parents will need at first. Her idea was quickly picked up by the Kin Club, has been nationally endorsed by the CF Foundation, and was a competitor in the Aviva Community Fund Challenge.
