FATHERHOOD THROUGH HARDSHIP Sevenish’s Reflection on a Tough Upbringing

“‘I will frown on you no longer, for I am faithful,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will not be angry forever.’”

–Jeremiah 3:12b

Richard Sevenish adopted me. I never knew he was my stepdad until he told me when I was in my teens. At first, I was crushed. But once it all sunk in, I realized that in his eyes, there wasn’t a difference between me and my brothers and sisters. Life dealt him a tough deck of cards; it takes a lot of strength to support nine kids with a factory worker’s paycheck. He was very smart and could’ve done bigger things in his life, but for him, his responsibility was to raise and support us as best he could. That’s what he did. It wasn’t perfect; he was hard on me, my mom, and my family. But he set a fire beneath me that propelled my career and attitude forward in life. While I was playing football in high school, my dad pulled me aside after watching one of my games. To avoid getting tackled, I used to dodge men, and to that my dad said, “Son, don’t just shimmy your hips away from the boys. Run straight through those sons of guns.” He was a tough, aggressive guy! Through him, I picked up that type of determination for life. That ferocious determination has been doing me well for a long time. By the time you receive this newsletter in June, I must ask: How’s it looking lately? At the time of

writing, the stay-at-home orders have been in place for a few weeks. We’ve made many changes to work remotely, and while it’s going smoothly now, it’s hard to predict what’s going to happen next. It reminds me that every inch of victory can feel like it comes with a mile of struggle. Despite the significant amount of good that my father’s done, when I think about a great challenge in my life, it was forgiving my father. My father and I disagreed on a lot, and whenever we fought, he was the only winner — after all, I was a kid. It took many, many years to understand that he saw special skills inside me before I knew them myself. It continues to the present day in how intensely I trained police officers at the police academy and karate students at my dojos and how fiercely I represent injured clients or protect my family at large. The best things in life just aren’t always easy to do. I think a life of forgiveness — while remembering the wrongdoings and standing up for yourself and others — is one of the best things you can do for yourself to enjoy life to the fullest. During my police or martial arts training,

I taught people to adapt to scenarios without thinking. You might expect to follow plan A in a given scenario. But in a dynamic world, where things aren’t static, you end up with plans B, C, and D instead of A. It might take more work than if you had just done plan A, but that’s what it takes sometimes. Adapting means thinking and running on your feet at the same time. It’s actually difficult for us to predict what it feels like to forgive someone. It takes adaptation in scary circumstances, and sometimes, people don’t make it very easy. After I forgave my dad, I felt a lot more peace with my life. I’m truly grateful for his influence on my life, and I’ll never forget the mistakes we both made so I don’t repeat them. Being a father or a son never gets easier, but we can still enjoy the best things in life, no matter how hard it gets. Look out for each other, love and forgive, and have a happy Father’s Day, everyone.

PSA: THE HARD TRUTH ABOUT STAYING PROTECTED FROM RECKLESS DRIVERS Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage Is on Your Side! No matter the reason why you’re on the road, as the firm of The Lawyer Who Rides™, we know just how dangerous it is to traverse without the right protection. We’re not just talking about helmets — we’re talking about uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. In the vast majority of cases we see, the defendant does not have insurance to pay for the damages. Think about it: The most reckless and dangerous accidents are likely to be caused by those who assume an accident will never happen to them, so they hit the road unprepared for the risks. Even with cases where we reach a high verdict for injured parties, if the wrongdoer is uninsured and files for bankruptcy, then the injured party will quickly find out that they’re out of luck. The best way to protect yourself and your family is to get uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Nobody likes to pay insurance companies a premium, even trucking companies. Our team has settled cases with trucking companies with only $2 million in coverage. That’s embarrassingly short for the potential damages of a truck, and some pay even less. Preparing for the worst might not seem ideal, but it’ll give you peace of mind and keep you protected. Unfortunately, people who are uninsured or underinsured affect more than just themselves. They also risk the futures of their entire families. That’s why, no matter what, you should invest in your future and buy the insurance you need. A $250,000–$500,000 policy is a great place to start as an individual. If you need advice about the coverage our team would recommend for you, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 317-636-7777. We’re here to help our fellow motorcycle enthusiasts stay safe!

SUPER BEAGLES AND JUMPING LLAMAS Guinness World Records’ Most Amazing Animals Hearing about someone who has claimed a Guinness World Record is pretty cool, but do you know what’s even cooler? When animals make world records. Here are a few amazing animals who hold some really cool records.

CASPA, THE AMAZING JUMPING LLAMA

Sue Williams is an animal trainer and behaviorist who specializes in dogs. One day, she was working on agility training with her dogs when she noticed her llama, Caspa, watching them. After a little time and training, Williams discovered that Caspa loved jumping, too. In 2015, Caspa cleared a bar set at 3 feet, 8 1/2 inches. He jumped right into the world record for “highest bar jump cleared by a llama.”

“He’s a complete diva,” says Williams. “So, if there are people there to show off in front of, that’s when he’s at his ultimate best.” DIDGA, A VERY TRICKY KITTY Anyone who says cats can’t learn tricks hasn’t met Didga. In 2016, Didga, with help from her human, Robert Dollwet, claimed a world record by performing 20 different tricks in 60 seconds. Her routine started with the classics, like sitting and giving high-fives, and culminated in riding a skateboard while hopping over a low bar. Dollwet told Guinness World Records that training Didga took a lot of time and patience and that he was so proud of his clever cat.

PURIN, THE BEAGLE WHO HOLDS 3 GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS

Nicknamed “The Super Beagle,” Purin scored her first title in 2015 for her amazing goalkeeping skills. The beagle “saved” 14 mini soccer balls thrown by her human, Makoto Kumagai, in one minute. A year later, Purin claimed another record when she became the “fastest dog on a ball” by traveling 10 meters in 10.39 seconds while balancing on a ball. Not long after, Purin and Kumagai set the record for “most skips by a dog and a person in one minute — single rope” with 58 skips. Talk about super!

EASY TIPS FOR STARTING YOUR GARDEN PARADISE!

Gardening doesn’t have to be expensive, and it’s a very calming hobby to pick up. With so many choices to make, however, starting your garden can be intimidating for new planters. How do you plan a garden? What are the important first choices to make? Our team is here to help! NO. 1: PICK WHAT YOU WANT TO GROW. You don’t have to grow vegetables, but they’re certainly delicious if you do! Nothing beats a homegrown salad or ratatouille casserole dish. However, if you won’t eat it, don’t grow it! Focus on the fruits, vegetables, and herbs that your family loves the most. For a successful garden, you should also consider your location and growing conditions as you choose your plants. Make sure you either do your research or consult a local expert before planting. Your local greenhouses might already know the best choices to pick from. NO. 2: SET THE RIGHT GROWING CONDITIONS. Most fruits and vegetables require a minimum of five hours of direct sunlight per day. Meanwhile, crops like greens, herbs, and root vegetables will grow in partial shade. Flowers, shrubs, and other plants, of course, vary widely! You’ll want to prepare an ideal location outside for your plants, or you can even find a cozy spot on the windowsill for your herbs to grow. Your “garden paradise” can come in small indoor packages too. NO. 3: TEST YOUR SOIL. In movies and documentaries, if you’ve seen farmers and gardeners dig their hands into the soil and examine it, there’s a very practical reason

why. The structure of your soil is important! While the soil is moist (not muddy or soggy), grab a handful and squeeze. Then, open your hand and poke the soil clump. You want the contents to look like crumbly chocolate cake and fall apart once you prod it gently. If it’s too firm, there’s too much clay, which means it won’t drain well. If it falls apart too easily, there’s too much sand or gravel. A loam — a balanced mix of sand, clay, and organic matter — is your ideal soil for most gardens.

Best of luck, gardeners! We’ll be back with more green tips for our garden-loving friends.
