T H E P E N IT E N C E O F PA - P IN I, T H E A T H E IS T A rep en tan t atheist, pros­ tra te a t th e cross, is th e un­ ique spectacle presented by Giovanni Papini, Italy ’s er­ ratic and spectacular gen­ ius, in his latest work, “The Life of Christ.” This book, which has recently been tran slated into English, is hailed equally by church­ men and literary critics as a profound piece of litera­ ture. The qgony of self-re­ vulsion revealed in th is work and th e scintillating style of th e w ritte r make it a peculiarly fascinating book to even th e most ir­ religious. And to those who have faith in religion, the story of P ap ain i’s con­ version and th e proofs he offers of th e divinity of Christ form an im portant contribution to the field of hagiology. To the average person a point of special in terest is th a t P apini’s acceptance of religion verifies an old tra ­ dition th a t frequently those who vilify Christ and His teachings most virulently later become His staunchest defenders. Many are th e self-asserted atheists who have tu rn ed aside from the vehement assertion of th eir disbelief to be humble fol­ lowers of th e Christian faith. A classic example of th is is Oscar Wilde, who had always professed himself an unbeliever, bu t during the time of his imprisonment and fiercest soul-agony, he sought solace in religion and paid it a beautiful trib ­ ute by w riting “ De P rofun­ dis.” The emotional Italian ’s trib u te is more intense and spectacular, and the fierce in v e c tiv e s w ith w h ic h he
