clear-cut gospel to give out. Educated in infidel, sem inaries, eaten up w ith th e ir self-importance, they give o u t only the vaporing of th e ir own poor and divinely unenlightened minds. I was urged some tim e ago to go and h ear in a certain P resby terian church a “w onderful p reach er!” This man preached from th e tex t in Romans 12, “ Overcome evil w ith good,” and any Buddhist or Confucianist or Eddyite m ight have given ou t th e same utterances. The man spoke for nearly one hou r and never once even remotely refrred to, much less mentioned th e name of our Lord Jesus Christ, or made any reference to His atoning work. And th is mis erable stuff passes as the Gospel of Christ in many a church today and the people are so sp iritually blind th a t they do not seem to know th a t th is religious vaporing in no way is an unfolding of th e tru th of God. If gifted and consecrated laymen h ad been continued in our churches these “ gentlem en of th e “ clo th ” would not have had things all th e ir own way as they now have. The hope of th e Church of Christ rests in a resto ration of th e prim itive principles of earlier days. Is th a t not a fact? Let us a t least hope and pray th a t th e re will be, th rough th e mercy of God our F ath e r, a re tu rn of tho se blessed and fru itfu l days ere our Lord Jesus Christ shall come again. W. S. Manners, M .D. San Francisco, California. A M ISSION F O R YOUR MAGAZ INE A call comes to us from th e Mississippi R iver Gospel Mission for back numbers of The K ing’s Business for dis tribution. This Mission is conducted by a good man and his wife (Mr. and Mrs. W illiam Cross) who go up and down th e Mississippi riv er in a boat, m inistering to th e lumber and levee camps, to steam ers and isolated families. A recent le tte r from these good people says, “ If some of th e Lord’s servants would send us a thou sand of the new edition of The Gospel of John (the best we have seen) we would feel like shouting ‘Glory’ as a d ear old woman did th e o ther day as her husband, 76 years old, confessed Christ on the bank of th e river n ear th e boat, afte r she had prayed for him for years. The neighbors in th e field heard her shouting and praising God and w anted to know th e reason.” Any one having old files of The K ing’s Business which they would like used in th e Lord’s work in th is way can send them to Wm. Cross, care of Mr. Balbach, R. R. No. it, Grand Rapids, Michigan. A PA T H Y SU CC EED ED B Y AV ID ITY Recently, “The P ilgrim ,” which has been so ably con ducted by our good bro ther, Rev. W. F. Ham, of Alcolu, S. C., discontinued publication and tu rn ed over th e ir sub scription list to The K ing’s Business, which procedure called fo rth th e following le tte r from a form er “ P ilg rim ” sub scriber: “ I was an original subscriber to ‘The P ilgrim ’ and deeply distressed when it suspended publication, and waited, w ith apathy, to see—w hat next. Yesterday my apathy disappeared, and avidity succeeded, as I opened th e A ugust num ber of your magazine. Have often read quotations from its columns, b u t was no t pre pared for the fulness of th e treasury. Have since devoted all my spare tim e to studying its different messages and find th a t to lose ‘The P ilgrim ’ was bad, b u t to gain its successor is good.” Ifc la»
