THE RACING PIGEON 19 APRIL 2024

WE HAVE 2024 SEASON LIFT OFF by Barry Pearce

The NE racing season opened on schedule on April 6th with races that can only be described as fast as anything. Right across the whole four NE firms results we see winners doing 24, 23, 22 plus YPM winning velocities, which unfor- tunately left some lofts with awol’s on the night, no doubt mostly yearlings that forgot to put the breaks on, so it was over the hills and far away being the outcome. I went down as I do normally to watch the Cole & Wheatley Family arrivals, as due to my life leading up to the first race was one hit after another, car, computer, phone, clothes washer and then a chest

won the Ormesby IRPC and it had won the Middlesbrough & District Fed, well it just had to be a results that I would look up, and its true. Gill Bros, Eddie still flies in memory of his brother Barry, we all go back those 60 odd years to when we all lived in the Cannon Street area. So from 677 Federation birds, Selby at 10.15am, on a 2373ypm velocity 1st OIRPC and 1st Middlesbrough & District Fed we have Gill Bros with a 5yo blue cock, and another of my club mates, for I am still a member of the club, we have club Secretary Rob Walker at 2nd & 3rd Club, 10th & 11th Fed, so well done lads.

Ian Miller and Steve Kyle, JM at work, 1st Fed MT Wetherby.

again fast as, the winner doing 2279ypm. Now across to Hartlepool, to the Owton Manor HS result, Selby again, and it was a 5/148 send and the one at 1st Club was to be the Federation winner. For the Peter Stout of the S&T Fed bred hen, a swap with Peter, after taking other cards, finally got her head in front on a 2361ypm to top the club and Fed for this 2x1st UNC winning loft of Tom & Dave Geach, Wayne McKenna and Dixie Chapman. At 2nd, 4th & 5th Club we have Bobby Powton and Mick Day, this a new partner- ship, but I’d never call either of the lads as being new, both seasoned fanciers, as are the Dawson Bros and Ritchie Stephenson partnership at 3rd, 1st UNC winners from years ago. Staying with Selby, and we have the Redcar HS result, a proper bunch finish with 12 birds hitting the allotments together, a proper free for all. So from a send of 9/308, it was the Mr & Mrs Paul Burniston loft that took the first four in the club and 1st & 2nd North Yorks Fed with two yearlings, and I did request twice further information about the arrivals, but? What I do know is that they have taken over Mick Preston’s allot- ment after toying with the idea of flying behind their house, but decided against it and came back to the allotments where Paul flew well before. They flew YB’s here last year, won the Chelmsford race, so are shaping up well, and the other two lofts that had arrivals on the same minute

were Alan Hall, Baldwin & Walton 5th Club etc and Bob McGillicuddy, as stated no further information. Federation winners now, I’ll stay with Selby before moving on to Wetherby results. The South East Durham had 868 in the baskets, the same 10.15 liberation, with these lofts flying give or take a few miles, about the 70 miles mark, and they even beat the hour flying mark. Flying just under 70 miles, Wild Bros & Ferguson timed at 11,04 to take 1st Club and Fed on 2443ypm, this with a TV Fed rung arrival bred by a Portrack HS member, and bought at one of Kyle Douglas’s charity sales, but this Horden EEHS winner was only just the winner, for Billy Million’s Easington HS winner was 2nd Fed on 2440ypm, and that is close on those velocities. At 2nd & 3rd HEEHS, 3rd & 4th Fed we we have Hockaday & Lovack, Adrian Lovack has taken over the Fed secretaries job from Brian Cartridge, he was a highly successful breeder and shower of budgies before switching full time to us, the fool! Just kidding Adie I think, but hope its turns out successful for you, and you’ve began well, for the first over the pads is a previous 4th UNC winner, a double Fed winner at that. The winners were back at 5th Fed, then it was the prior mentioned Brian Cartridge with a Horden HS winner, this loft flying as Cartridge & Hall topped the UNC last year. Mr & Mrs Wild & Son Rob, another 1st UNC winner were on the clock with two for 7th & 9th Fed, both HEEHS arrivals and another Easington HS timer was at 10th Fed, this one for Marr Bros. The Blackhall winner was at 14th Fed in Dave Roberts loft. Thanks Neil, keep them coming pal, I’ll do the rest. Right. We’ll go to Wetherby results now, and Steve Kyle is on the ball early with his Mid Tyne Fed result. The Wetherby pigeons had two cuts, 8.45am and 9.15am, the Mid Tyne with the second lot, and the Fed had a 22/505 send, broken down its Boldon HS 10/339, Hebburn HS 3/37 and Jarrow AHS 9/129, distance to all being about the 70 miles or so line, and again the hour mark was well beaten. Taking the first three in the BHS we have a top loft of John & Ian Miller and Steve Kyle, Steve being Fed

Geach Bro and team, 1st Fed at Selby.

infection all give me serious grief, so I was nowhere near being ready for the first race. I said to the lads, you want them before the hour to be in with the leaders, and I was right. Up at 10.15am at Selby, 55 miles or so to fly, a fresh southerly on them, and sure enough, one was spotted dropping to near by club mates Mr & Mrs Harry Heard on the three minutes to hour mark to be timed to win the club, this being a spare hen. They also took 2nd as well, so they’ve began well following on from the 2023 season as to was Alan Crook as he was in at 3rd, and he took the single £10 nomination with one not to long behind it. Wellburn & Sons were at 4th and Davie Hutchinson took 5th, and Cole & Wheatley Family? Exactly, but they’ll be back! My rule is simple, send the results to me, and I’ll do the rest, I’m not getting results from anywhere else, as I put it, if you are bothered I’ll get bothered, if you aren’t well ditto from me. I have occasionally gone against my rule, and this is to be one of those times, for when I heard that my 60 odd years friend Eddie Gill had not only

The Eaglescliffe HS same race point, same time up, had 10/258 in the baskets, and it was the Alan Starkey & Sons Wayne and Lee that struck not only gold, but bronze as well as they had 1st, 3rd & 4th Flub, all hens with Phil Armstrong on 2nd & 5th, his first a hen, a blue cock his 5th Club, and the velocities were yet
