Better water in store for Casselman, Limoges and Russell

VICKY CHARBONNEAU vicky.charbonneau@eap.on.ca

A crowd of local business people has gath- ered in Embrun to attend the announce- ment pertaining to better clean water infrastructures for the region. These in- vestments will allow residents of the Village of Casselman, Limoges and Township of Russell to benefit from modern, reliable water and wastewater services that better meet their needs. Francis Drouin, MP for Glengarry- Prescott-Russell, on behalf of Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communi- ties and Grant Crack, MPP for Glengarry- Prescott-Russell, on behalf of Bob Chiarelli, OntarioMinister of Infrastructure, joined the local mayors for a special announcement on Tuesday, July 4, during a press confer- ence held at Bertrand Heating & Plumbing in Embrun. Five new projects have been approved for this region under the Government of Canada’s Clean Water and Waste Water Fund, to which the federal government is providing up to 50 per cent of funding for this project - $1,501,763, and the provincial government is providing up to $750,882. “Investing in water and wastewater treat- ment infrastructure is essential tomaintain- ing a healthy environment and providing access to clean, reliable drinking water,” announced Drouin. “The government of Ontario continues to invest in the kinds of infrastructure project that keep our communities safe, provide reliable access to clean water, and protect our waterways,” followed MPP Crack.

For Russell, the support from the federal ($787,000) and provincial ($393,000) govern- ments will help projects that include water- main twinning and water and wastewater servicing of Russell’s commercial park. “The majority of these funds will help create a back-up water main to the village of Embrun as well as service the current Embrun com- mercial park,” explained mayor Pierre Ler- oux. “We’ve been waiting for this approval for quite some time to move forward with the project - an important project not only

for the current businesses in the park, but for the future development of the area and our municipality”, added Russell councilor and PC candidate Amanda Simard. ForThe Nation, these investments, which add up to just about $645,000, will help build a new water reservoir for the village of Li- moges. “We’ll be able to offer more capacity, which alsomeans more safety for people of Limoges. Thanks to the two upper levels of government, we are now focusing on growth, as opposed to just repairs,” declared The

Nation mayor, François St-Amour. “Casselman is also very thankful for the pumping station we are going to be able to build,” said councilor Lafleur, representing mayor Conrad Lamadeleine. We need to have good water, especially with the growth we are experiencing at the moment.” Laf- leur mentioned over 640 houses which are being built, along with a senior residence and an extra 600 houses still to come. The Village of Casselman is receiving a total of over $430,000.
