Dec. 3 weekend. Every year, the Hawkesbury General Hospital Foundation (HGHF) organizes and sponsors the Santa Walk Run event in Casselman as part of the village’s annual Christmas Festival.The event is part fundrai- ser for the HGH mental health and addic- tion program, and part community cheer competition as every runner, from the tall
to the small, dresses up in a Santa Claus outfit, with some runners even sporting full white beards. In Hawkesbury there are six children, ranging in age from 5 to 14, who are part of the Hawkesbury Runners program.They all wanted to take part in the Santa Walk Run this year but needed help with the regis- tration fee. Steven Sockett, organizer and co-founder of the Hawkesbury Runners, put in a call to a friend of his, Lana Barnes, one of the local agents for Ottawa-based Exit RealtyMatrix, asking if she would be willing to help sponsor one of his little runners. “I said to him, ‘How many kids do you have for this?’” mentioned Barnes, during a phone interview. “He told me six. So I said I would ask around.” Barnes got together with her fellow agents and agreement was almost immediate. “They all said tome, ‘For the kids? Absolu- tely, we’re in!’” added Barnes, with a chuckle. The agents of Exit RealtyMatrix presented the $180 registration fee for the half dozen young runners and the Hawkesbury Santa Six were on their way and at the starting line Sunday morning, Dec. 3, for the Cas- selman Santa Walk Run. They all ran the full five-kilometre route, though they could have chosen the shorter 3.5K run, collected their participation medals, and got their photos taken. They also got to meet with Santa, because with somany people running around dressed up in red suits and tuques, one of them had to be the real deal.
A personal visit with Santa Claus is a dream come true for every child. For six kids from Hawkesbury, they got some help for an even bigger and better dream, because they got to go running with Santa in the Casselman SantaWalk Run event over the
