L ocated just an hour’s drive south of Belgrade, on the undulating hills of Šumadi- ja, is Topola, a town with a name that’s inextricably linked to the birth of the modern Serbi- an state and the Karađorđević dynasty. When September starts colouring the vineyards in golden and crimson hues, this entire area acquires a special at- mosphere, as the air carries the scent of ripened grapes and Šumadija’s restau- rants prepare local specialities. The story of Topola begins at the foot of a hill, in Karađorđe’s Town.
