The rhythm of these cities slows during this period, with the bustle of their streets taking on a more moder- ate tone, while the coast offers ideal con- ditions thanks to air temperatures of a pleasant 25°C, which guarantees a per- fect balance between bathing and explor- ing rich history. DUBROVNIK Dubrovnik maintains the full ca- pacity of the summer bathing season in September, though without kilo- metre-long queues at the entrance to the Old Town. Banje Beach, located right next to the walls of the Old Town, offers a unique view of the stone tow- ers from the seafront, while Lapad Bay provides a more tranquil environment, with fine pebbles and ample shade in its pine forest. For those seeking more iso- lated surroundings, the rocks under the walls are home to iconic bars like Buža, where you enter through a tiny stone opening in the city walls to reveal ter- raced rocks that are perfect for refresh- ment in the deep blue. Apart from enjoying the seafront, the city’s culture calendar also offers top events. From 8 th September, the atri- um of the Duke's Palace hosts a cycle of concert evenings performed by the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra that form part of the Dubrovnik Musical Au- tumn event. At the same time, the his- torical Lazareti quarantine complex hosts a series of performances by the Folklore Ensemble Linđo, which leads
attendees through original Dalmatian and Dubrovnik folklore with the tradi- tional lyre instrument. You, of course, shouldn’t miss the chance to walk the city walls, which cov- er a distance of almost two kilometres. The views of the city’s terracotta-colour- ed roofs and the open sea under the golden sun provides for unforgetta- ble shots. There is also an excursion to Lokrum Island, which is just a ten-min- ute boat ride from the city’s old port and boasts a nature reserve known for its wild peacocks, a botanical garden and a healing salt lake called the Dead Sea. For a panoramic view of the entire archipel- ago and the Old Town, take a cable car ride to Mount Srđ at sunset. SPLIT September brings a similar harmo- ny of urban spirit and seaside relaxation to Split. Its legendary urban Bačvice Beach represents a unique phenome- non, due to it being a sandy bay at the very heart of the city. It is in its shal- lows every day that you can see people playing picigin, an authentic sport from Split that is protected as an intangible cultural asset of Croatia. The rules state that it is played with a ball that you pass around and keep in the air, with par- ticipants throwing themselves into the shallows. For those who prefer shingles and pine, Kašjuni and Bene beaches, on the slopes of Marjan Forest Park, offer cleaner waters and natural shade. In terms of culture, Split gains a spe- cial artistic stamp in mid-September. This year, from the 11 th to the 18 th of the
month, the city will host the 31 st edi- tion of the Split Film Festival, an inter- national festival dedicated to experimen- tal and independent film, which has been bringing together auteur voices beyond the confines of commercial streams since 1996. Following film screenings at Kino Karaman cinema, the city calls on you to experience its historic core. The 4 th century Diocletian’s Palace isn’t a monument surrounded by a no-go barrier, but rather represents the heart of Split. Stroll through the Peristyle porch that houses an authentic piece of ancient Egyptian history in the form of a sphinx that’s more than 3,500 years old and was personally brought from Egypt by Em- peror Diocletian. Descend into the pal- ace’s cellars, then climb the bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Domnius to enjoy the most beautiful views of Split. Drink a coffee on the famous Split Riva prom- enade while watching boats, then climb up to Forest Park Marjan, known as the “lungs of the city”, and enjoy magical views of the entire Split waterfront.
