UKRATKO / IN BRIEF
Džez na obali jezera Mičigen Jazz on the shores of Lake Michigan
C hicago’s true musical identity is most clearly re- vealed in early September, from the 3 rd to the 6 th of the month, when the famous Chicago Jazz Festival takes place. This festival, which has a tradition dating back more than four decades, represents one of the world’s most important and prestigious free music events, bring- ing together over a hundred thousand lovers of sound at the heart of the Windy City. The festival’s central stage is located in the monumental Millen- nium Park, where under an open sky, between famous sculpture The Bean and the futuristic Jay Pritzker Pavilion, the voices of world jazz icons and talented local musicians intersect. Chicago was historical- ly a key stop in the Great Migration, during which African-American musicians from the South brought blues and jazz north, transform- ing them into a faster, more urban and tactically complex sound. It is this tradition that the festival celebrates each year. The repertoire has been carefully designed to encompass the entire spectrum of genres - from classic be-bop and swing, via avant-garde improvised jazz, all the way to contemporary fusions with the rhythms of world music. In addition to the main con- certs staged in the park, the entire city lives in a uniform rhythm during the days of this festival. Iconic jazz clubs like The Green Mill (once a favourite of Al Capone) and Andy’s Jazz Club organ- ise jam sessions that run until the early hours of the morning. For travellers visiting Chicago, this festival provides the perfect op- portunity to experience firsthand how the city’s culture, history and urban energy can fit into just a few perfect beats.
