84th Grand Chapter Meeting Edition (Summer Issue)

STATE OF THE EASTERN PROVINCE

Robert L. Jenkins, Jr. Esq. 28 th Eastern Province Polemarch

Eastern Province actions and activities for 2017-2019 as relating to our 33 rd Grand Polemarch’s Six-Point Management Plan for Kappa Alpha Psi under the 33 rd Administration. Community Service: We have a ro- bust Social Action/Community Service Committee (SAC) in the Eastern Prov- ince, led by Brother Edward Thomas of the Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter. a. In the Spring of 2017 during our 92 nd Eastern Province Council held in College Park, MD, hosted by the Upper Marlboro/Waldorf (MD) Alumni Chap- ter at the College Park Marriott Hotel and Conference Center from April 6-9, 2017, we hosted a “socks and shoes” project. The purpose of this event was to supply Prince Georges County Family Crisis Center and Homeless Shelter with an overly abundant supply of “Socks and Shoes”. That is exactly what the Eastern Province did, with the help of Baltimore (MD), Roanoke (VA), Columbia (MD), Charlottesville (VA), Bowie/Mitchellville (MD), and Fort Washington (MD) Alumni Chapters, with special thanks going to Richmond (VA), Fort Lee (VA), Danville (VA) and Dulles-Leesburg (VA) Alumni Chap- ters. Undergraduates who contributed to the Social Action Project are: Alpha Iota, Epsilon Zeta, Eta Sigma, Eta Xi, Theta Psi and Rho Theta. The Social Action Committee project was a great success. Success will be truly measured by the number of children or adults that take advantage of the Socks and Shoes program. The committee wants to punctuate that the things we do in- dividually are small; but collectively, we have impacted not only one family, but many families and individuals. The total number of shoes donated to Prince Georges County Family Crisis Center and Homeless Shelter was over 400 pairs and over 200 pair socks. Special thanks go to M and S Shoes

Store of Norfolk, who donated 50 pair of new shoes. b. In the Fall of 2017, at the Officers Workshop (August 18, 2017) hosted by Fort Lee (VA) Alumni Chapter (FLAC) we participated in another social action. Approximately 165 book bags were col- lected and subsequently distributed to Harrison Elementary School of Dis- putanta, VA and Vernon Johns Middle School of Petersburg. The brothers of FLAC delivered half of the back packs, full of school supplies to Harrison El- ementary School. c. The Eastern Province Social Ac- tion Committee realized the importance of iKare, a response vehicle that’s only activated when a disaster occurs. At the 2017 CRWLC, the Social Action Com- mittee asked the Eastern Province Board of Directors to approve a $4000 gift to iKare for recent hurricanes (Harvey and Irma), which was overwhelming ap- proved. Not only was money donated to I-Kare but over $4,000 was donated by the chapters and individual brothers of the Eastern Province to help relieve the tragedy. This brought the Eastern Province to over $8,000 donated, once again showing why we are the “Flagship Province, leading the way”! d. In the Spring of 2018, The Un- dergraduate Leadership Conference was held in Salisbury, Maryland, February 9-12, 2018. Undergraduates from all over the Eastern Province attended to gain knowledge on team building, networking, how to run an undergradu- ate chapter as well as finding jobs. As always, the Committee has come up with a project to help give back to the area. The SAC found an organiza- tion called Kidz ROC: Reaching Our Children, a nonprofit organization and sports program that uses sports, semi- nars, classes and activities to build social economical change in the lives of under privileged young men and women in the

Salisbury community. Kidz ROC asked for sports equipment and educational board games to help in this cause. Once again the project was successful, thanks to the undergraduates who showed their love for helping the less fortunate. e. In the Spring of 2018, the Prov- ince traveled to Fredericksburg, VA for the MTA cluster. The Eastern Province SAC was called on to fulfill a need, working with a local ministry that helped homeless youth and young adults. U4C Victory Ministries worked diligently throughout the year in the Fredericks- burg Region to help meet the needs of youth and young adults within the homeless community. Also, the various items for survival were desperately needed as the young adults and homeless move from homes, shelters and even to the streets. Because the need was so great, each region of the province was asked to donate certain items to reduce duplication of items and better ensure a diverse coverage of the numerous items needed by the commu- nity. We made the difference. f. In the Fall of 2018, the Eastern Province SAC introduced the province to Loisann’s Hope House in the greater Fredericksburg area. The Loisann’s Hope House is set up to help place homeless families into their own homes. Over 80 families have their own homes, thanks to the Hope House. Their needs included dry goods and cleaning products to be used by the needy in the Fredericksburg area. The items filled a long closed in van to the top with other items to be dropped off at the Hope House by Brother Xavier Richardson. Twelve undergraduate chapters participated, do- nating cleaning products, trash bags, and paper towels with the Alpha Phi Chapter leading the way. Nineteen Alumni chap- ters participated donating a plethora of items with all sorts of cleaning products,
