84th Grand Chapter Meeting Edition (Summer Issue)

STATE OF THE EASTERN PROVINCE

hosted the Undergraduate Leadership Conference. The ULC was very suc- cessful in many ways, not only were the undergraduates able to socialize, learn different ways to make their chapters successful, they were also identified as having a giving heart in the way they were able to make the Social Action Project one of the most successful projects we have had. Clothing was donated to the Central Union Mis- sion homeless shelter, a Social service agency at 65 Massachusetts Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20001. Even though this was an undergraduate conference, we identified several alumni chapters that donated items as well. Norfolk (VA) Alumni Chapter led the way with 110 pair socks donated, followed by Fort Washington (MD) Alumni Chapter with 58 pair socks, Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter donated 30 pair. Other alumni chapters that donated were Roanoke (VA) Alumni, Fredericksburg (VA) Alumni, Salisbury (MD) Alumni, and Chesapeake-Virginia Beach (VA) Alumni Chapter. The Social Action Committee is proudly to announce that Undergrad Leadership Conference was able to donate to the Central Union Mission homeless shelter 791 pair of socks to the needy. Thank you to the undergraduates and alumni chapters that made this a very successful project. i. The Social Action Project for Spring 2019 Spring MTA was a part- nership with Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Virginia located in Roanoke, VA. The three themes they promote are Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship, Healthy Lifestyles. We will be encouraging our Province to show its support by donating hygiene bags. The gallon size freezer bags will include toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, wash clothes and soap. The committee is happy to say that the Spring 19 MTA candidates turned in over 700 bags filled

trash bags, cases of paper towels, case of Clorox and Clorox wipes. Norfolk (VA) Alumni Chapter was the big donator of the alumni chapters with an enormous number of items. g. In the Fall of 2018, the MTA Cluster and C. Rodger Wilson Leader- ship Conference was held on November 1-4, 2018, at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland and hosted by the John Hopkins Colony of the Lambda Zeta of Kappa Alpha Psi and the Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter. The Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi recommended a Toiletry and Winter Clothing Drive to benefit its educational partners: Booker T. Washington Middle School, Renais- sance Academy and Eutaw-Mashburn Elementary School. In addition, with cold weather approaching the students desperately needed new and gently used outwear- coats, scarves, hats and gloves. There were a host of chapters that donated, but Norfolk (VA) Alumni Chap- ter and Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter were two outstanding chapters that went above and beyond the norm as they have done so many times in the past. Other chapters that donated were Epsilon Sigma, Lambda Zeta, Mu Mu, Theta Psi and Rho Kappa. Of the alumni chapters that gave were Aberdeen (MD) Alexandra/Fairfax (VA), Annapolis (MD), Baltimore (MD), Chesapeake/Virginia Beach (VA) Alumni, Dulles-Leesburg (VA) Alumni, Fort Washington (MD Alumni), Frederick (MD) Alumni, Fred- ericksburg (VA) Alumni, Gaithersburg/ Rockville (MD Alumni), Hampton/New- port News (VA) Alumni,Bowie/Mitch- ellville (MD) Alumni, Columbia (MD) Alumni, Fort Lee (VA) Alumni, Franklin/ Southampton (VA) Alumni, Martinsville (VA) Alumni,Roanoke (VA) Alumni, and Woodbridge (VA) Alumni. Averett Univer- sity, Rho Kappa Colony, led the way for undergraduates with 30 bags. j. At the 94 th Eastern Province Coun- cil, the SAC worked with Green Drop selected by the American Red Cross, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the National Federation of the Blind and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Philadelphia, to raise funds through the generation of donated clothing and household items. Donated items were converted into critical dollars for these organizations, to assist them in upholding their mission and programs for supporting American veterans, the nation’s blind and neigh- bors in need. k. The Eastern Province has been a strong contributor to the St. Jude’s Sunday of Hope Program. To date our province has raised over $150,000.00 for this effort. National and Eastern Province St. Jude’s Chairman Cornelius “Neil” Hudgins, IV led these efforts. We had multiple local chapters put on Sunday of Hope programs, we have province wide donations. We hosted a national Sunday of Hope Program on March 30, 2017. These are all efforts that have led us to being one of the top contributing provinces to the St. Jude’s Sunday of Hope Program. Infrastructure: The Eastern Prov- ince has a technology committee dedicated to expanding and upgrading our technology infrastructure. This com- mittee is led by Brother Robert Brown of the Dulles-Leesburg (VA) Alumni Chapter.
