BETHLEHEM, PA - Adap- tive re-use projects and their impact on the community were the topic of a March program organized by CREW Lehigh Valley PA in the heart of downtown Bethlehem. The late afternoon event featured tours of two early 20th Cen- tury buildings finding new life as apartment buildings----the Farr Building, which was completed in 2012 and the Dodson Building, anticipated to be complete this spring. Anthony Scarcia, president of Allied Building Corpora- tion, which is developing the Dodson Building and provided construction services in the repurposing of the Farr Build- ing which opened two years ago, discussed features that make a building a candidate for adaptive reuse. Key factors include the structural integ- rity of the building, the capac- ity of the building to adapt to the program and flexibility to work within the building constraints. Insights as to why the urban

lifestyle is increasingly attrac- tive to both Millennials and retirees were offered by Dr. Joel Nathan Rosen, associate professor of sociology at Mora- vian College. He recalled the post-war boom of suburban tract housing popularized by William Levitt that cre- ated homogeneous neighbor- hoods; today cities are being reclaimed by residents who value urban vibrancy. In the early days of the 20th Century, the Dodson Building was the home of the Lehigh

AL- TRealty is the leasing agent for both properties which are being repurposed into one and two-bedroom high-end units, with street-level retail included at the Farr Building. The afternoon concluded with a networking reception
