suicide have underlined the tragic conse- quences of bullying. Taunting, mimicking, insults, hazing and gossip are just some of the ways that people are victimized. Bullies are cowards who tend to prey on those who appear weak, Jordan pointed out. Bullies tend to stay away from those who appear confident, said Jordan. Tech- nology has opened up a whole new world of potential victims. The proliferation of “I hate” groups and cyber bullying has led to a whole new set of challenges. Everyone ought to be careful with the information they share on social media, and be cogni- zant of the fact that what is shared publicly remains public forever.

Or, as anti-bullying expert Jim Jordan puts it: “Don’t be a bystander.” Bullies can only continue to victimize targets if wit- nesses continue to stand by and not act, Jordan told an assembly at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute Tuesday. “Don’t tolerate any form of bullying,” he urged students. When he asked for a show of hands, most students indicated they have witnessed some form of intimida- tion. The author and motivational speaker stressed that bystanders have the power to tackle intimidation by intervening directly or by reporting the incident to authorities. It is estimated that one in ten students drop out because they are afraid they will be picked on at school, said Jordan, who is president of ReportBullying.com.Recent cases where victims have been driven to
