clean for ¿ve years before I know that the cancer will not come back,” noted Curren. “I will be undergoing tests every three months for at least the ¿rst year. I think about what might happen. What if I don’t have ¿ve years? I think of that. My son is only 10. I would like to do as much as I can with him. I want to live life to the fullest.” HPV Almost 100 per cent of cervical cancer cases are caused by HPV. In Ontario, each year, 500 women get cervical cancer and 140 die from the dis- ease.

household product. June 18, Curren underwent a PAP test, which produced an “abnormal” result. An- other examination was scheduled. “They do the diagnosis by dabbing vinegar on the cervix. Vinegar. Who knew?” During the excruciating procedure, Dr. Alain Marleau knew something was wrong. “His face changed. Cancerous cells turn white. I could see the expres- sion on his face. It was not good.” June 29, she underwent a biopsy at the Ottawa General Hospital. July , Curren prepared to go to see the movie “Ted” with her family. It will be a good distraction. The cell phone rang. It was Dr. Marleau. “Debbie, it’s positive.” July 17 was a scorcher of a day. The temperature reached 40. Curren was ad- vised she could not go swimming. She met the team at the women’s onc- ology centre in Ottawa. “It is surreal to go to a cancer clinic. You say it can never happen to you, and it does. You never realize how many other people have cancer.” August 20 and Au- gust 30, more meetings were held to pre- pare for her operation. September 21, Curren undergoes a radical hysterectomy performed by re- nowned surgeon Dr. Michael Fung Kee Fung. “The nurses were super nice.” Four days later, “I am rapidly going into full-blown menopause. VANKLEEK HILL | “ Grow old with me...the best is yet to be.” The words from the Robert Browning poem are inscribed over the mantle of the home Debbie Curren shares with her husband, Bernie Traynor, and their son, Jacob. Curren is very much looking forward to growing old, although a few months ago, she was not sure whether she would live to see her 49 th birthday in March. Cancer. The con¿rmation came in July, July to be precise. Curren, a registered nurse at the Hawkesbury and District General Hos- pital, has kept a journal of her “surreal” battle against cervical cancer. She is sharing her story because she wants all women to heed a message they often hear. “Get your PAP test. Do not put it off. For goodness sake, it can save your life.” At the same time, Curren strongly urges girls to receive the vaccin- ation against the human papilloma virus (HPV), which this year will claim about 150 lives in Ontario. After recovering from life-saving, life- altering surgery, Curren has a new per- spective on life, a new appreciation of the strength of friendship and new in- sight into the versatility of a common

mind.” Medication has helped her deal with that condition. Kind words have helped boost her morale. Curren picked up a sheaf of “get well” cards. “I think everyone at the hospital wrote something on the cards. These cards are amazing. That really picks up your spirits.” The 20-year veteran RN returned to work full-time November 20. That did her good. “Cancer can consume you if you let it.” There will be regular follow-up exam- inations to determine how successful the operation was. “I was never afraid that I would die because with cervical cancer, they can get all of it. But I have to be
