Sustainability Manager

• Take a lead role for environmental sustainability in- itiatives both directly within the Sustainability Team and across the university • Development of policy and strategy for environmen- tal sustainability including preparation and mainte- nance of all necessary documentation. Advise VCG and senior management on compliance with legisla- tion and regulation within this area and manage com- pliance as appropriate • To review existing university and sector policies, pro- cedures and guidance and identify opportunities to improve the University’s sustainability and environ- mental performance, including in the areas of en- ergy, water, biodiversity, procurement, waste man- agement, transport, construction/refurbishment, teaching and research and community engagement • Implement the development, management and maintenance of appropriate environmental monitor- ing systems, surveys and audit processes and their incorporation into existing systems and procedures and records. This includes HEFCE returns, the devel- opment and management of an accredited environ- mental management system (EMS) e.g. EcoCampus with a view to obtaining ISO 14001 • Develop, implement and maintain a University-wide Sustainability and Net Zero Carbon Strategy, along with appropriate carbon targets, KPIs, policies, ac- tion plans and annual review reports • Develop and chair a sustainability working group with representation from university leadership, support staff, academic staff and students for the purpose of contributing to the development and implementa- tion of sustainability and net zero initiatives on cam- pus and aiding the inter-departmental adoption of such initiatives • Manage utilities including: procurement of supply contracts, budget management, monitoring and reporting and implementation of energy efficiency measures • Develop a good knowledge of the existing estate; its buildings, plan and other equipment, patterns of us- age and running costs • Analyse metered information using appropriate soft- ware to identify high users and take corrective action in conjunction with Facilities Management colleagues • Project manage a variety of initiatives from incep-

tion to completion. Agree briefs with stakeholders, prepare programmes and budgets. This will include identification of critical decisions, monitoring pro- gress against programme and budget, reporting to senior management and ensuring energy efficiency measures are embedded in the design of all buildings • Develop an ongoing plan for efficiency improve- ments which reduce utility consumption, emissions and produce financial savings • Engage and liaise with staff, students and other or- ganisations (internal and external) to support the practical adoption and implementation of sustaina- bility initiatives on campus. Also to represent the uni- versity at a local, regional and national scale • Manage the environmental budget, including efficient allocation of resources, monitoring and reporting • Influence other members of Facilities Services to en- sure environmental sustainability is embedded with- in all activities e.g. Capital Projects • Manage promotional campaigns across the universi- ty to reduce environmental impact • Co-ordinate the assessment and positioning of Dis- play Energy Certificates (DECs) for all university premises • Develop the sustainability skills and knowledge of students through appropriate channels e.g. by organ- ising curricular and voluntary activities both through the Sustainability Team itself as well as working with other university teams • Manage internal and external press and promotional activities relating to environmental sustainability, in- cluding management of the UEL Sustainability web- site and UEL Sustainability social media accounts • Undertake such other duties at a comparable level of responsibility that may be allocated by the Head of Facilities Services To work in a safe and healthy manner always en- suring statutory and university health and safety re- quirements are complied with at all times; • Manage initiatives and activities in accordance with statutory health and safety requirements and in par- ticular construction, design and maintenance regu- lations. THE DEPARTMENT: The Sustainability Team are a part of the Estates & Facilities Directorate at the University of East London. The Sustainability Team is responsible for the development of the Net Zero & Sustainability Strategy in order to help UEL achieve its goal of becoming a net zero carbon institution by 2030. The Sus- tainability Team promotes and enables sustainable behaviour change across the University’s staff and student population to generate measurable results through staff and student engagement, energy efficiency projects and retro- fits, incorporation of sustainability into the curriculum and sustainability re- porting and communications. Sustainability is also supported by other Deliv- ery Partners in the University such as; Health & Safety, Facilities, Maintenance, Procurement, Finance and Capital Projects.

This role has responsibilities for the management and delivery of environmen- tal sustainability related output including developing the Sustainability and Net Zero Carbon Strategy and strategic energy management. The post holder will act as sustainability champion, leading the university’s drive to improve its environmental performance across all its activities and driving cultural and behavioural change throughout the organisation. This will involve developing and implementing policies and management systems and co-ordinating environmental sustainability activities across the university.
