precinct became a hub of racing stables until recent times, the last of them the late Bart Cummings’s Saintly Place. Himself a surveyor and entrepreneur, Byron Moore maintained his post at the VRC for an astonishing 44 years. The first of his many far-sighted moves was personally to buy seven acres (2.8 ha) from the Bagotville subdivision when the committee hesitated to do so. He later sold this land to the Club – at cost price. Byron Moore continued Bagot’s tradition of measured innovation. Next time you wander out the back of Flemington to enjoy The Park, raise a glass to Bagot, Byron Moore and the spirit of Bagotville.
