‘BAGOTVILLE – THE NEWMELBOURNE SUBURB’. NEVER HEARD OF IT?
BY ANDREW LEMON
A bout 140 years ago, astute land developers subdivided a piece of open countryside immediately north of Flemington Racecourse into housing blocks. Buyers could choose between panoramic views across the course or riverside blocks along the Maribyrnong.

The allotments sold well but ‘Bagotville’ as a name did not stick: the suburb merged imperceptibly into Ascot Vale. At least half of of the subdivision was absorbed into Melbourne’s Showgrounds. Yet Bagotville has an important place in the Flemington story. The landscaped grounds behind the Hill Stand, including the popular Melbourne Cup Carnival precinct The Park, were originally part of Bagotville.
2
Why ‘Bagotville’? Timing is everything. Robert Cooper Bagot died in April 1881 aged 53, just before this land went on the market. The name was invented as a tribute – and as a piece of shrewd marketing.
‘R.C. Bagot deserves his place in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame: he made Flemington famous.’
R.C. Bagot deserves his place in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame: he made Flemington famous. He was the VRC’s first Secretary (CEO) when the Club was formed in 1864. He did not invent the Melbourne Cup. That was already up and running. But Bagot can take the credit for turning The Cup into the greatest race in Australia, for establishing the Melbourne Cup Carnival in its enduring pattern and securing Cup Day as a public holiday. By 1880, Grand Flaneur’s year, a crowd exceeding 100,000 came to the Cup. Bagot had made Flemington an internationally renowned showpiece – all in the space of 17 years.

3
Back when the first Melbourne Cup was being run in 1861, Bagot as a civil engineer and surveyor was busily supervising the transformation of the Melbourne Cricket Ground from a paddock into a magnificent sporting oval. When he came to Flemington he similarly transformed the basic racetrack into a proper racing surface. The two greatest sporting arenas of our city owe a debt of gratitude to ‘The Indefatigable’ R.C. Bagot.

Bagot always innovated. Racing matters he left to the committee. Practical planning was his forte – improving, building, landscaping, as far as budgets stretched. He created Flemington’s first huge grandstand. Today’s Lawn Stand is on its footprint. He masterminded the Straight Six track. He issued ladies’ tickets to the all-male membership, a clever way to boost attendances, and set the highest standards for the smooth running of race days. Bagot’s successor as Secretary, Henry Byron Moore, was the land developer responsible for ‘Bagotville’. The names of the two principal roads commemorate the early VRC Chairmen, C.B. Fisher and William Leonard. The

precinct became a hub of racing stables until recent times, the last of them the late Bart Cummings’s Saintly Place. Himself a surveyor and entrepreneur, Byron Moore maintained his post at the VRC for an astonishing 44 years. The first of his many far-sighted moves was personally to buy seven acres (2.8 ha) from the Bagotville subdivision when the committee hesitated to do so. He later sold this land to the Club – at cost price. Byron Moore continued Bagot’s tradition of measured innovation. Next time you wander out the back of Flemington to enjoy The Park, raise a glass to Bagot, Byron Moore and the spirit of Bagotville.

KENYAN WONDER drops back from G3 level. PARWAN PRINCE won here fresh a year ago at this trip. JIM BEAM HILL PLATE The Hill Plate, sponsored by Jim Beam, celebrates the heritage of Flemington’s Hill, the original natural vantage point over the racecourse. Ever since, The Hill has been one of Flemington’s favourite locations, with the best views for the general public. With the auction of the adjacent ‘Bagotville Estate’ in 1881, Secretary Henry Byron Moore helped the VRC purchase extra land and extend the Hill Reserve.

BRIAN HIGGINS 56 $61 FORM SUMMARY POCKET GODDESS looked the winner before peaking late on debut, her dam was a 2yo Magic Millions winner on a soft track. FRENCH BOSS was a sharp improver last start, she should get a nice smother in transit. QUILLER’S DELIGHT showed good pace in a recent jump out. SCHWEPPES BAGOTVILLE TROPHY The Bagotville Trophy is a special reminder of Flemington’s colonial heritage. It commemorates the great contribution made by the VRC’s inaugural Secretary, Robert Cooper Bagot. The ‘Bagotville Estate’ was auctioned in 1882, and the VRC was able to acquire part of the land to expand the Flemington Hill reserve.
