Maple Hall gets wheelchair-access makeover

special events. “The Lions recognize that the current ar- chitectural design and physical features of Maple Hall limit access to persons with a mobility disability,” stated Gordon Kerluke, Cumberland Lions Club past president, in a press release. “To correct this shortfall, the Lions have identified the services and facilities that people with disabilities rely on, and have considered how persons with these disabilities could best access their facility.” Kerluke has been project manager on the Maple Hall mobility re-fit since it began. Last year, with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the club installed a barrier-free washroom in the building. The next major addition on the project schedule was a new ramp. The hall does have a ramp at the front

Cumberland | It is one of the venerable old community buildings in the Village of Cumberland and now Maple Hall in the heart of the old village is ready, open and welcome to anyone in a wheelchair or needs to use a walker or crutches to get around. Executive and regular members of the Cumberland Lions Club celebrated the completion of their latest efforts at mak- ing the community heritage building more wheelchair-accessible with completion of a new barrier-free access ramp route at the rear of the hall. An automatic door-opener device is also now installed to allow visitors using wheelchairs or other mobility-aid de- vices to let themselves into the building for

the club to designate a couple of parking spaces near the new ramp for handicapped parking only. Funding assistance for all wheelchair- access upgrades to Maple Hall so far have come through grants from the City of Ot- tawa’s urban affairs department under the Rural Community Building program, from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and from the Lions own various fundraising efforts. Work andmaterials for the project has come from Lions volunteers and local experts like Dave Hansen and welder Mike Scott. Cum- berland Ready Mix donated the concrete for the ramp project.

door but, Kerluke noted, “there are limita- tions to its design.” The club considered several ideas for im- proving ramp access to the building, includ- ing re-doing the existing ramp at the front. But the cost in materials and expert work to allow for the building elevation at the front were more than the club could budget for the project. Estimates for that scenario ranged from $16,000 to $18,000. The Lions club consulted a local contrac- tor and then had a plan drafted for a ramp at the rear of the building that would provide easier access for wheelchair-users and oth- ers. This design cost less and also allowed

Counties council wants new federal infrastructure aid plan VISION@EAP.ON.CA PRESCOTT-RUSSELL investment plan that covers at least a 10- year period and guarantees that local pri- orities on roads, bridges, sewer and water projects get first consideration.

L’ORIGNAL | Public works improvement projects start to wind down with autumn’s arrival before the winter winds bring the snow. Local mayors look ahead to the fu- ture and how to pay for future road, bridge and other improvements in Prescott and Russell counties. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) will support a resolution from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) demanding the federal gov- ernment devise a new long-term infrastruc- ture aid program for both provincial and municipal governments. The AMO proposal calls for a capital works

The resolution states that federal infra- structure funding for provinces should first be based on the total provincial popula- tions and the economic importance of the region. It also demands that part of the federal infrastructure investment fund should be dedicated to municipal projects in recogni- tion that municipalities “are owners of the greatest portion of public infrastructure” and that municipal priorities based on lo- cal long-term asset management planning should carry the most weight for grant-in- aid approvals.
