PENSION REFORMS AND NEST FAQS

7 September 2011 We have published a number of FAQs in respect of Automatic Enrolment and also some FAQs on the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST). Updated FAQS 2 November 2011 The Policy team have updated the Q & A on Pension Reforms which has also been posted on the CIPP’s Specialist Interest Group (SIG) forum. The revised document includes an additional Q & A about the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST). Q. If an employee has 2 jobs, both of which pay above the earnings threshold, then both employers could automatically enrol the employee. If both employers use NEST: · Would the employee automatically have one NEST account (identified through NINO etc) which is paid into through 2 employers, or potentially is it possible that they accidentally get two accounts? · How would the employer know that there is another employer paying in contributions if the employee doesn’t mention it? · Assuming one NEST account, what happens if the £4200 contributions cap is met because there are double contributions? How do the employers know to stop putting in for that year? And what happens if they don’t? I have found the NEST instruction that says that any overpayment made by the employer will be repaid, but is there a system that stops it happening or potentially could this go on for the rest of the year? A. We use Name, NINO, DOB and Gender to match potential duplicate accounts. So wherever possible we work to ensure that there are no multiple accounts for the same person – but it is NEST’s responsibility to sort this, not the employer!
