Summer wonderful addition at Parc Simon GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

Rockland | Summer holidays may be over but that doesn't mean kids can't enjoy the cool refreshing fun of the newest addition to Parc Simon's playground attractions. Le Club Optimiste de Rockland and its sup- porters and well-wishers gathered to cel- ebrate the enthusiastic official opening of the new Parc aquatique Optimiste Aquatic Park. "It was a WOW! thing," said Denise Vail- lancourt, the 2008 president for the club when planning began for the project. "I am so happy for our children, that they have somewhere to go and enjoy and are safe and secure." Cloudy skies and the threat of rain the morning of Sept. 6 had organizers won- dering whether to reschedule the late af- ternoon event for over the weekend but also feared there might not be any families with children show up for the ceremony. Clearing skies and warm sunshine in the afternoon also brought with them kids and caregivers from local daycares to take ad- vantage of the situation. The City of Clarence-Rockland provided space in Parc Simon for a miniature aquatic park, also known as a splash pad, similar in size and scope to those that already exist in Limoges, Casselman and other Prescott- Russell communities. The Optimiste club members looked after securing financ- ing and more in-kind contributions for the $150,000 project. "The location is perfect," said Lucie

Leclaire, the current Rockland Optimiste club president. "It's close to all the daycares and the the schools." Half of the funding for the project came

from an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant. The club put up the other half through its own fundraising activities. Club officials cited four community part- ners for special help on the project: Les Serres Bergeron/Landtech, Centennial Con- struction, Chayer Électrique, and Potvin

Construction. The design of the facility makes use of a “dry hydrant” and two underground tanks to store water used for the splash pad. The stored water will then be recycled through the park’s watering system for flower beds and grass.
