so much to be studied as to be received into the heart. The facts are familiar but ofttimes neglected. Incidents of Calvary (Luke 23:33-38) Suggested in these wonderful verses are the following: (1) the crime —“they crucified Him” (33). They put upon a cruel cross the only man who really had a right to live. They crucified Him be tween two thieves as though He was the worst of all malefactors; (2) the prayer —“ Father, forgive them” (34). The de sire of the Saviour’s heart was forgive ness of sinners; (3) the gambling — “ cast lots” (34). While Jesus was dying, man’s indifference expressed itself by gambling for His garments; (4) the people —“the people stood beholding” (35). Apparently their attitude was in different; (5) the rulers — “ derided Him” (35). They showed their smallness by belittling Christ; (6) the mockery —“the soldiers also mocked Him” (36, 37); and (7) the superscription —“a superscription written” (38). The writ ing in the three great languages of that day was an undesigned witness to the fact that the Lord Jesus Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords. The Cry of Calvary (Mark 15:34) This was the most awful cry ever to pierce the air. Beyond our comprehen sion, Christ became forsaken of His Father. This was the price He had to pay for man’s redemption. The penalty of sin is separation from God. On Cal vary the Son of God endured this sep aration that man might not have to en dure it. He was not mistaken when He uttered this cry. Christ was never mis taken. He expressed what was taking place in His holy being as He was dying. The Committal of Calvary (Luke 23:46, 47) It was Christ Himself who brought to an end the Calvary experience. In one sense, no man took Christ’s life from Him (John 10:17,18). He laid it down of His own accord. Love kept Him on the cross until He had paid the full price necessary for redemption. Then He bade His spirit depart from His body. Somehow what the centurion heard and saw in this connection caused him to glorify God and witness a good confession. A vision of Calvary should cause us to do the same. A Friend of Calvary (Matt. 27:57-60) The vast majority of people at Cal vary had no real heart for Christ, yet there were some who stood by Him. Joseph of Arimathaea was one of these. Soon after Jesus died this disciple (57) begged Pilate for the body of Jesus. He wanted to place Him in his own new tomb (60). What is there that you can do to show you appreciate all that Christ has done for you? T H E K I N G ’ S B U S I N E S S

In the lesson before us is the focal point of Scripture. The Old Testament in prophecy, ceremony, and type looks forward to it. When Christ came He an nounced that He must go to Calvary (Matt. 16:21). All Scripture written after Calvary looks back to it as its in spiration. This week’s lesson needs not
